IT was a incredible day at The Open which ended with Tiger Woods sitting menacingly in joint second place – just one shot behind leader Miguel Angel Jimenez.

World No.1 Woods birdied the last to stay two under and has been cut to 5-2 favourite to win at Muirfield.

He certainly looks in the mood to end his Majors drought and will clearly be the man to beat. Spanish star Jimenez isn't fancied for his first Major and is 16-1 almost across the board.

Britain's hopes look to lie with Lee Westwood and Martin Laird. Westie sits alongside Tiger after a superb second day and is 7-1 at Coral while Scotsman Laird is one shot further back and is 25-1 at Paddy Power.

Henrik Stenson (10-1, various) and Dustin Johnston (12-1, Paddy Power) are also on -2 while Zach Johnson and Angel Cabrera are in a group on -1.

It's tough picking a winner at this stage but Zach offers each-way value at 28-1 with Coral.

Players now of course go out in twos and a couple players I fancy to win their pairing are Brandt Snedeker and Thomas Bjorn. Snedeker was going along nicely until a four-putt near the end cost him a double bogey.

He is paired with former Open champion Stewart Cink and nine times out of 10 you'd back Snedeker to get the better of the older American. He is 8-11 at Betfred.

I'd been eyeing up Thomas Bjorn as a possible each-way contender until he withdrew at halfway from the Scottish Open with a neck injury. The Dane says he's almost fully recovered and having comfortably made the cut a low round on Saturday could push him high up the leaderboard. He is 4-5 at BetVictor to outscore South Africa's George Coetzee.

Recommended Bets

(8-11, Betfred)

Bjorn to beat Coetzee (11.30am)

Your review encouraged me further Mr F. I have Stenson and Zach each way with Bjorn and Kuchar not that far distant. Surely one of them can make the top eight. Most of my money on Stenson though and he’s done very little so far to make me worried.

Lord Clegg, it’s such a congested leaderboard to be honest. But if you have 4 or 5 still in contention after today you should be able to do some laying.

Been searching through the golf trying to find some value bets. Gone for Jordan speith, the young American who is being touted as the next big thing. He won the John Deere classic last week to qualify for the open and has looked good the 1st few days. He is sitting at 1 over, only 4 of the lead and odds of 80/1 on an each way bet look good value to me .

Neil h, I can’t see Spieth lasting the pace. He’s done well the first two days but remember at one point yesterday he was -3 so fell back like many others. His time will come though as he looks a great prospect and he was pretty cool throughout in the play-off I watched last week.

I’ve got Scott and Westwood ew so getting a run for my money at least.
I also took Westwood for a top 10 finish – if he finishes joint 10th would I still get full payout?

    • Mr Fixit 11 years ago

Knottsy, if he’s joint 10th dead-heat rules would apply so depends on how many finish 10th with him. But he looks like he’s going to do much better with his putting sorted out and his new coach seemingly working wonders.

    Ok cheers Paul.

I think the bookies try it on with these golf finishes. If there’s one player clearly first and three come level as second then the next one is mysteriously classed as 5th when to my mind they should be third!

    • Mr Fixit 11 years ago

Lord Clegg, in this case you have it all wrong. How can a guy finish third if four others beat him! The three players joint second will have the same score, the same prize money etc. The guy who’s fifth will get fifth-placed money. I don’t think anyone will side on you with this one.

I think this is one for me to ponder on over the weekend Mr F- but I look on it as a ruse by the bookies to ensure they pay out less money. If three or four are equal second then that’s tough they should pay out on all of them and also any players who are also tied for third. From the bookies point of view I can see why they go 1st- 2nd- 5th.

    tough to call the winner.
obviously if westy carries on in the same vein he will win.
likes of mickelson could come into it if westy shoots 3 over tomorrow.
think tiger is waiting for the field to come to him instead of grasping the metal and being a bit braver.
he might pay for this tactic if it doesn’t work.

    my top 3

    Mahan
    Cabrera
    westwood
and mickelson if he shoots -3 or better tomorrow.

Hope Westie dunt win..basically a arrogant nil persponality nob and has ridden his luck with longer ranged putts and some strange mistakes for 3 days. I think he will steadily fold when the heat gets ramped up 2moro. Tiger, another individual who doesn’t look like he enjoys life has had some strange ideas, tonights 17th was an incredible poor play, taking an iron off the tee and then requiring a stonking 3 wood to carry 240 yard over bunkers into wind which he dumped into and bogeyed on a par 5!?? For me, Adam Scott is the most solid looking and best value at 7/1in play or thereabouts now, he has the form and the credentials and is a major winner.

    • Mr Fixit 11 years ago

Guido, Adam Scott must have a chance but I don’t mind Westwood. Reckons he deserves to win one.

  12. Guido 11 years ago

be good to watch Paul. think there’s 10/11 who have a chance and 4/5 a realistically chance of winning, you’d obviously want to have a few shots in hand but on that course ala Martin Laird this afternoon u can put yourself right out of it in one bad hole, with the heat on 2moro theres gonna be some cock ups (and i dont mean Tigers off course hobby!!:-). I’ll stick ma neck out for Scott (aside form having him on at 25’s) and hope jason day can run a place. Wid luv Phil to win and aside from a few putting blips he’d cooda been right in there. I suppose the thing is there’s only 7/8 in the hunt as opposed to 25 so if someone could manage a 66/67 from any of those 5/6 that are 4 or 5 hehind/away from the main last 2 or 3 groups circus they could be the winner from 4 or 5 back quite easily?

Guido, Els won from six or seven back last year and of course Lawrie won from 10 back at Carnoustie but can’t see it happening tomorrow. My tips will be up soon.
