Liverpool vs Chelsea

, KO: 16:30 Apr 14, 2019, Anfield
Chelsea

THIS promises to be the defining game of Liverpool's season and those of a superstitious bent will be watching through the cracks in their fingers.

It was a home game with Chelsea where the Anfield's side last genuine title tilt fell apart, with Steven Gerrard's fateful slip sending them on their way towards a damaging 2-0 defeat.

And with little room for manoeuvre as they bid to keep pace with Manchester City at the top again, another mistake could prove equally costly.

To add to the demons, City face Crystal Palace on the same weekend, replicating the fixtures for the top two from that defining round of games in 2014.

It was Brendan Rodgers who was in charge at Anfiled back then and now it's Jurgen Klopp looking to deliver the club's first title since 1990.

Klopp has told the players and fans to forget about that infamous Gerrard slip and focus on the task at hand.

But it's bound to have some sort of effect and Liverpool's displays have been nervy as they head down the home straight.

Klopp's side haven't kept a clean sheet at home in the league since the Merseyside derby on March 3 and they haven't been facing the highest calibre of opposition.

The likes of Burnley, Fulham and Southampton have all given Liverpool a scare but the Reds have shown their character by bouncing back to record victories.

Chelsea have plenty to play for themselves as they look to seal a Champions League slot and I fancy both teams to score here, which is a best 4/5 with Betfred.

Tipping a Liverpool win with both teams to score has come up for me a few times, although Porto let me down in midweek by drawing a blank, and it could pay again at 12/5 with Bet365. But this could end up a stalemate if Chelsea turn up and backing that with both teams to score pays better at 17/4 with BetVictor.

Both managers should be able to field their strongest sides, although the Blues will be fresher after Sarri rested some of his top players for the midweek Europa League win over Slavia Prague. Klopp didn't have that luxury against Porto, although Andy Robertson missed that game through suspension and will be fresh to face Chelsea.

Chelsea's win in 2014 was largely down to the spoiling tactics of Jose Mourinho, who parked the bus in his own inimitable style and frustrated Liverpool by time-wasting and fouling.

Maurizio Sarri is more of an idealist and I can't see him resorting to the same infuriating game plan. That suggests a few goals and I fancy over 2.5 strikes at 4/5 with Bet365.

The bookies have boosted a few prices for this one and I'm having a bet on the 6/4 Boylesports offer on Sadio Mane having two or more shots on target. The same firm also offer 3/1 on a penalty to be awarded and that looks good value.

There's another interesting requested bet at William Hill, who are offering 29/20 on each side picking up over one card. That looks great value in such a high-stakes game.

This match between Liverpool and Chelsea will be played on Apr 14, 2019 and kick off at 16:30. Check below for our tipsters best Liverpool vs Chelsea prediction. You may also visit our dedicated betting previews section for the most up to date previews.
