MYSTIC FLIGHT (3.00) drops into a handicap with a big chance at Newbury. Roger Varian’s three- year-old lost nothing in defeat when trying to concede a stone to odds-on Honey Man at Chelmsford City last month and could prove a cut above some useful but exposed older rivals.
Sabador has been well bet during the week and clearly a big run is expected.
LADY BAKER (4.10) contested a very hot novice stakes at Newcastle last month when shaping well in finishing fourth to Elasia. The first, second, third and fifth all won next time and John Gosden’s filly may be on the upgrade after a poor debut effort at Wolverhampton.
Warm favourite Sextant looked a bit of a handful on his first start for the Queen at Nottingham and may be worth opposing.
The lady riders’ race over 1m 4f has an open look to it and PERLA BLANCA (5.15) is worth an each-way interest. She spread-eagled her rivals at Doncaster but that was over two miles, so this much shorter trip is a worry. However, Newbury’s long straight may see her stamina kicking in late.
The Great St Wilfrid Handicap at Ripon is the highlight of the north Yorkshire track’s year and course specialist PIPERS NOTE (3.15) should give his backers another huge run. Ruth Carr’s speedster has run them ragged over course and distance this summer and may be able to go one better than last year when just denied by Mattmu off a similar rating. Pipers Note has drawn stall one on the far side which is often the place to be in these big sprints.
At Newmarket, REBEL STREAK (2.45) should go close to defying a 6lb penalty in a competitive three-year-old sprint. David Probert was on top when Andrew Balding’s blinkered gelding scored quite comfortably at Leicester earlier this week but Jason Watson takes over, with his 5lb claim almost negating the penalty.
SCARAMANGA (5.05), third at Doncaster to hotpot Willie John and Hidden Depths (runs 4.40 Newbury with big chance), drops into handicap company and a mark of 81 shouldn’t prove beyond James Fanshawe’s colt.
BERTOG (5.35) found a mile on soft ground over-stretching his reserves at York but had run really well previously on the Knavesmire over 7f when denied by Byron’s Choice. Andrea Atzeni is an eye-catching booking and Bertog gets the nod over Salisbury runner-up Prevent.
The ground is drying out at Chepstow and that may enable THE JEAN GENIE (7.40) to put her best foot forward now tried over a longer 1m 4f trip.
Clive Cox’s filly was nailed on the line by Caravela at Newbury and was then given an unconventional ride at Windsor last time. The Jean Genie often leads but with frontrunners Glens Wobbly and Lady Valdean in the line-up I’m hoping Tom Marquand will be content to sit in just off the pace.
