REMEMBER Terry Gibson? Well, we've signed him and while he won't be kicking a football he'll be looking into his crystal ball and bringing us his best Spanish tips every week.
The ex-Spurs, Coventry and Manchester United striker is probably best remembered for his time as part of the infamous Wimbledon Crazy Gang side of the late 80s and early 90s. Now an expert in all things La Liga he works as a pundit and co-commentator on Sky Sports’ Spanish football coverage and is a contributor to unibet.
Here he previews two Sunday games.
Girona v Espanyol (Sun 11am)
There was a contrast in fortunes in midweek for these two. Girona were victors at Alavés, a really solid victory, and Espanyol crashed to a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Eibar. Quique Sanchez Flores was roundly booed by the home fans and the disappointing season that his team are having is beginning to take its toll. The fans need someone to blame and they have picked on the coach.
Espanyol have lacked investment in the squad but I understand the irritation of the fans towards the negative tactics from the former Watford boss. A return of 26 goals scored in 33 games is a dreadful return. Girona, meanwhile, have been spectacularly good this term for a team playing their first season in the top flight.
However, I’m going to favour a team playing away from home and away from the pressure of their own fans to succeed. Surprisingly, I’m going to go for an away win for Espanyol but with the slender scoreline of 1-0. Gerard Moreno is perhaps the only player likely to score for Espanyol and I believe he will be the match winner.
Terry's Tips
- Girona 0, Espanyol 1 (17-2, Unibet)
- Moreno to score first (13-2, Unibet)
- Under 2.5 goals (16-25, Unibet)
Atletico Madrid v Real Betis (Sun 7.45pm)
I backed Real Sociedad to get the win against Atletico on Thursday evening but my prediction was for a 2-1 victory. So I was pretty taken back by the emphatic scoreline of 3-0. Real Sociedad have shown really good form since their managerial change but to score three against Simeone’s team still takes some doing.
Will Simeone rest some of the established starters for this game to ensure that they can regain some sharpness for Arsenal in midweek? I think he probably has to.
Betis are currently on a run of six consecutive wins and in the last five they haven’t even conceded a goal. It was a last-gasp win against almost doomed Las Palmas on Thursday when youngster Junior Firpo got a 95th minute winner.
Whilst not as prolific as they were earlier in the season they certainly know how to grind out a result. I’m looking at the 0-0 in this game!
Terry's Tips
- Atletico 0, Betis 0 (17-2, Unibet)
- No scorer (8-1, Unibet)
- Under 1.5 goals (49-20, Unibet)
