Monchengladbach v Werder Bremen (Fri 7.30pm)

Gladbach’s relief was palpable when Christoph Kramer volleyed in a sensational winner at Hannover last weekend. Prior to that effort, they’d gone just over seven hours without scoring a Bundesliga goal. That too ended a run of four straight defeats without scoring.

There was a similar outpouring of emotion over in Bremen but for different reasons. A scrappy combination of Bremen striker Ishak Belfodil and Hamburg defender Rick van Drongelen helped force in a late Nordderby winner for Werder but they’re still only two points off the relegation playoff spot.

Going into the game at the Borussia Park, coach Florian Kohfeldt has no new injury worries and has spoken of his hope that Max Kruse will get a bit more room to operate in, following the close attention he received from both Freiburg and Hamburg.

Gladbach coach Dieter Hecking worked with Kruse during his time at Wolfsburg in what was an unhappy spell for the player. You’d suspect then that Kruse, particularly with Gladbach also being a former side of his, will be revved up for this one. He and Bremen might benefit too from playing a Gladbach side which are undoubtedly more attacking than Freiburg and Hamburg.

The home side are unlikely to have Raffael at their disposal due to a calf problem but he missed their victory over Hannover. The big question is how much confidence that win will have given his team-mates. Werder are a better side under Kohfeldt than their position in the table suggests and are good value here for at least point.
