THE new football chat thread has proved popular so we'll continue with it for now – and remember the top tips post is where you should put all predictions and betting chat.

This is the place for general debate on anything to do with football – from team performances, the current state of Scottish football, how long will Stuart Pearce last at Nottingham Forest and who will be next Newcastle manager.

The St James's Park post looks certain to be filled by Remi Garde who is now a best 4-9 at McBookie and BetVictor while caretaker John Carver is 12-1 third favourite with the same firms.

Bun fights between supporters are for fans' forums – so keep them for those sites. Talk to each other but don't be abusive, bigoted or racist.

I said we'd give away £10 free bets at bet365 for comments of the day over the first three days. Pretty much at random I've decided to give them to bigmick and Wolerine – email me at mrfixit@dailyrecord.co.uk for details on how to claim your prize.

One more £10 free bet will be given to another contributor today.

Talking about the state of Scottish football, do you ever think it’ll stop raining up here Mr F – Hurlford’s blair park is water logged at the best of times. I don’t know when we will be able to play a game on it again!

    • Mr Fixit 9 years ago

Jamie, I would say no although I hope it does as I’m looking forward to the weekend Scottish Cup games – home to Shettleston which won’t be easy. Right, I’m off – up early to take my daughter to college.

home to Shettleston, should be a cracker.

Mr Fixit, Can your Top Treble or other tips contain a mixture of Win, BTS and Over sometimes instead of 1X2 only. You doing pretty good and I have been lucky to always select and mix them together instead of playing 1X2 only.

Hi all. I was watching the barca game yesterday and I have to say it’s so difficult I choose and pick a winner. We all go on stats and form however when you think about it you can’t predict defensive errors, cards. Etc. Messi controlled the ball with his arm it looked like for the second goal. Some Atletico players could off had a red as the sane with Messi for his karate kick on the goalkeeper. Atletico never should have had a penalty. lot of it does come down to luck and decisions by refs on the day. Something that we cannot predict. It makes you think about some form of video replay that the refs can use. Took them a while for goalline tech. Maybe we will get video replay soon. I think it would definitely help the game and the refs.

I don’t usually comment, but last night I was watching the colo colo match on bet 365. The team they were playing went to 10 men and the odds went to 150 to 1. This was just before the end of the game and the score was 3-2.

I only put 30p on and lo and behold it won so I got 50 quid. I have done this four times now all with South American games. I usually put on one or two quid and win a couple of hundred, so I was annoyed this time I slipped up and only did a tiny bet.

Has anyone else noticed how bet365 give crazy odds on these games just before the end of the match? It is well worth looking at and taking a punt with small stakes. You can get fantastic returns.

    Any comments?

Given the fact that Man United are on the exact same points this season as last season under Moyes 37 after 21 games and Moyes was then sacked in April just how safe is Van Gaal’s possition at the club, with the incredible amount he has spent, his insistance on playing players in possitions that dont suit, his team continally looking tired and picking up injuries consistantly no doubt due to him having doubled the training that most other prem lg teams do plus the fact that he makes calls that make no sense at all like not even finding a place on the bench for Falcao and when in desperate need of a goal deciding to take off a player like Di Maria who ill admit had a poor game but with his quality at any given time he could produce a moment of brilliance.
From what ive seen so far this season im far from convinced that United under Van Gaal’s dictatorship is a move in the right direction,i expected a lot more.

    • macca the red 9 years ago

personally i don’t think man united will qualify for the champions league again this season, infact i know they wont,to get into the top four you need to win more or less every game home and away especially the home games and they don’t look like they are good enough, vaan gaal is nothing special as a manager he talks the talk but he cant walk the walk tacticly he was out fought yesterday, all the attacking talent on show,di maria looks ordinary at best after all he is just another winger and dont forget he had the likes of ronaldo and bale that made him look better than he is.for me they will finish around 7 or 8th.

    • Mr Fixit 9 years ago

Sean, van Gaal’s job is safe – Moyes’s face didn’t fit from the start but van Gaal has already said he needs time and he’ll get it.

  16. gg1a 9 years ago

sean, its a more level playing field these days,
man u dominance is in past, every team capable of beating each other, another manager wont make a difference, that would just unsettle the club even more, expect to see classier defenders coming in, give southampton credit,
they defended well which is an art itself.
there still up there without playing great, can only improve, im gutted too they lost, backed them, and man u admirer , my sons season ticket holder .

  17. dolky 9 years ago

Richie.its Dolly. I was thinking same as u why don’t Mr fix
Do a single he really fancies then DO a treble like 1 game 2.5 goals 1 both teams
To score and a team to score 2 …leave the 2.5 goals treble out.wat u think mate.
Ask him se wat he thinks……

    • Mr Fixit 9 years ago

dolky, the treble can be on any market and in the past it’s had all sorts in it – nothing is off limits.

I have a little story on the dangers of the cash out button.

Twas a Tuesday night back on 30th September last year I had £5 on 4 draws with bet365 – 2 in the Championship and 2 in the Champions league. Brighton v Cardiff, Wigan v Forest, APOEL v Ajax and Shakhtar v Porto.

The bet was returning £640 for my £5 stake. I watched that nights offering of Champions League football on STV and was keeping an eye on my bet which with 10 minutes to go was looking rather good…

Wigan v Forest was 0-0, Brighton v Cardiff was 1-1, APOEL v Ajax was 1-1 and Shakhtar v Porto was 1-0. All I was needing was a Porto equaliser and I was in… Checked the cash out and I was getting offered £55 but I wanted the £640 – Porto were all over them – dangerous attack after dangerous attack…

Then Shakhtar score on the break 2-0 on 85 minutes. My bets gubbed. The cash out is now offering me £3.40 which isn’t far off my £5 stake so I stupidly take it.

Then almost as soon as I’ve cashed out Jackson Martinez pulls the one back for Porto on 89 minutes 2-1. It’s not going to happen is it? Surely not? Have I just taken £3.40 in place of £640?

Yep that’s right after Jackson Martinez scored on 89 minutes he then goes on to equalise on 93 minutes and I’ve done myself out of £640 for the sake of £3.40!!!

To say I was gutted is an understatement (I’ve only just got over it) but I learned a valuable lesson that night… Football lasts 90 minutes (sometimes longer)… Never cash out for measly sums if there’s even the slightest chance your bet can still come in.

    • Mr Fixit 9 years ago

Bingo, it’s a good lesson but for £3.40 you should never cash out. I rarely look at the offer because it’s better to cover a bet.

  20. Sean Ireland 9 years ago

Mr F you are most likely correct that he is safe for now but my point is given the facts ive stated above, his unwillingness to see that Van Persie has had a poor couple of seasons and should be dropped i honestly think the man is too stubborn, too set in his dated ways,United need a more modern younger man, someone open to new ideas,Dortmund even though they are having a poor season,Atletico and even Southampton have the type of manager im talking about.
Van Gaal to me to be set with lunacy, take for example the world cup when he replaced his number 1 goalkeeping choice Jasper Cillessen at the end of 120 minutes and just after he had kept them in the tie with a fine save and replaced him with Tim Krul for the penalties that move could have caused a lot of friction in the team, luckily for him it worked out but it could so easily have backfired and the Dutch nation would have been up in arms and dont say it was a genius move, penalties are all 50/50 so it was pure chance, they can swing either way a bit like Jessie J the pop singer i believe she swings both ways greedy b1tch, but thats a different story ;),anyway that decision showed me that the man is fringed with madness rather than genius.

    • Mr Fixit 9 years ago

Sean, I don’t think United will sack another manager so quickly and van Gaal will get the time he needs. On the Krul incident you have to credit him – he thought Krul was a better penalty saver and was proved correct. I don’t have a problem with that at all. Anyway off to walk the dug in the freezing cold – I’ll say hi to the Yeti.

    • daz 9 years ago

Alex Ferguson nearly had the sack in his first season. There is no way LVG will be sacked especially as the club have told him he has 3 seasons to get the team back into Europe.

  21. Bingo 9 years ago

Betting naivety on my part Mr F and I was rightly ridiculed by a few of my mates for it.

Thing is the weekend before that I had a fiver on 4 draws 2 Italian and 2 Spanish games and a 90th minute goal done me with the other 3 drawing however they were different kick off times. Then on the Thursday after I made the cash out blunder I had a fiver on 4 South American games through the night mostly in Argentinas B division and a 92nd minute goal done me again!!! So within a week last minute goals and my own stupidity done me for around £1500!!! Sickening but that’s betting for you…

  22. Dave G 9 years ago

Couple of replies here…Bingo, cash out was created to benefit the bookie not the punters, each of us has a different staking plan and budget and at the end of the day getting 3.40 back is better than losing 5 so you took the chance to get something back in the last 5 mins rather than lose it all, cant say i blame you for that, the only time i will cash out is when my bet is winning and i want to minimize my risk for the final 5 mins, had a 3 euro treble winning with last game 1-0 5 mins to go, offered 305 of 320 cashout took it gladly as my team were being battered at the time. Ended up winning 1-0 and so i gave 15 of my potential winnings back to the bookies, but I hit a 100-1 treble so i wad happy enough. Sometimes I will do 2 same accas for a euro each with the intention of cashing out on one for profit #speculation lol and letting the other one run…havent hit it yet though from a handfull of tries
Second reply to Sean & Mr F, united under SAF used to go 8/10 games unbeaten, lose one, recalibrate, and then go on another 10 game tear. Now i admit i have my Man United redtinted glasses on here, but 8 of our next 9 games before we play city and chelsea look very winnable to me (lpool away being toughest one)
At the same time both chelsea and city have to play each other and deal with huge champions league games.
I will predict (hope! Lol) they will drop at least 7-9 points before we play them both at which point momentum will be with us and… well, anyway my point is its worth a fiver at 33-1
    ;)

American banker Robert Sarver has pulled out of takeover talks with Rangers after his second offer for the club was rejected.
The 53-year-old had offered £20m for a majority stake in the Championship club.

  24. Jordan 9 years ago

Sean agree on the lunacy subject (a few substitutions) in our last two games were puzzling) but I don’t think they’ll be as quick to get rid of him like they did with Moyes. I feel a lot happier as a United fan this season although stats show we’re in the same boat as we were with Moyes. We’ve lost 3 games in 17, but it’s the draws that have hurt us recently (3 in 4). For me the decider is the records that Moyes broke when he was manager.

    1. First time Everton, Manchester City and Liverpool have beaten United home & away since Premier League’s inception

    2. First time Everton have beaten United home and away since 1969-70

    3. First time Everton & Liverpool have ever done a league double over United in the same season

    4. First time Man City & Liverpool have beaten United home & away since Premier League’s inception

    5. United were guaranteed to finish the season with their lowest ever Premier League points tally

    6. United failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1995

    7. United’s worst home league form for over a decade

    8. Suffered three defeats in a row for the first time since 2001

    9. Eliminated in the FA Cup third round – something which happened just once under Ferguson

    10. First home defeat to Newcastle since 1972

    11. First home defeat to West Brom since 1978

    12. First league defeat to Stoke since 1984

The big decider was obviously no Champions League football. Played Everton on the 20th April, lost 2-0, mathematically unable to secure a Champions League spot, Moyes sacked on the 22nd. I think we need to evaluate where we are at the end of the season. If Moyes had got us Champions League football I believe he’d still be there, but he didn’t and he isn’t.

Certainly wouldn’t think of ejecting Van Gaal at this moment.

  25. Alva glen 9 years ago

Stan Collymore said a few sundays ago on Talk sport that Man.U could win the league obviously there was something strong in his breakfast tea. For me they still have not sorted their central defence out.The thing is the longer this takes the older Rooney and Van Persie are becoming so cant see them winning anything for a while yet.

  26. Augustus 9 years ago

Frank, back in December I was watching the Villa v Man U game on bet365 with about 6 minutes to go and bet365 offered 150-1 for villa to score. It was 1-1 at the time. I thought it was a mistake and lobbed €2 on. Villa (I think benteke but could be wrong) went up the other end in the last minute and nearly scored. Defo worth a punt for a €1 when the odds go mental. Watch the last 5 mins for odds in most matches and they give huge odds. I stuck €2 on sporting at 10-1 with 5 mins on clock yesterday and they won with free kick last minute

  27. rick 9 years ago

Stan collymore loves utd.dont have a clue why.after Liverpool game he was adimant they where in title race.

  30. nathan ufton 9 years ago

Just had a quick look on tinterweb to see if theres any news about Notts Florist impending managerial change and theres not a lot, just a quote from Pearce saying Florist need to show fight for the next game at Derby.

However, Betvictor have odds up already for the next manager. Tim Sherwood is favourite, but I think Keane is still my gut feeling , he’s 6-1 think he’s third favourite.

Any die hard forest fans on here have an opinion about this? I mean I’m assuming Pearce seems to be far too passive as a manager, and it shows in post-match press conferences, whereas Keane is definitely a player/manager that you wouldn’t wanna screw with. I remember his battles with Viera.
Do you think Forest need a boss that’s made of sterner stuff?

  31. nathan ufton 9 years ago

Match officials have just been announced for this game. Time to get to work and research.

    Derby County v Nottingham Forest
    ANDREW MADLEY
    Simeon Lucas and James Wilson
    Fourth Official Mark Haywood

    • nathan ufton 9 years ago

He’s the 13th sternest ref out of 68 refs. He’s done 6 championship games and dished out 26 yellow, no red, works out at 4.2 yellows per game.

  32. daz 9 years ago

There is a ‘big derby’ rivalry and I expect their to be a lot of cards.

    • nathan ufton 9 years ago

I couldn’t agree more, look on soccerway at the last 5 seasons head to heads, there seems to be a red card 2 out of 3 times too. I’ll be posting up my summary as per usual and dependant on where the bookies put their line in the sand, depends on how I’ll tip on that game.

I listened in to the radio derby Monday night phone-in and the main topics were:

      1. who is gonna play in Eustace’s role since he’s picked up his ban – will it be back to mascarell who seems to play better at home or do we drop in Shotton.

      2. What role with Darren Bent play as he’s always good for a goal on his debut ( I don’t think he’ll start ahead of Martin but wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a start against them from the bench ).

      3. Stephen Warnock is on the verge of signing from Leeds but a foot injury has delayed that.

      4. The signature of a U21 Swedish defender had been completed.

      5. I think also a Spanish defender has been signed too.

      6. Does McLaren change things around to accommodate Bent.

The fans phone in pretty much said why fix something that aint broken, and regardless of us worrying about who to fill one players place, forest have 11 places to worry about.
The talkshow hosts also re-iterated my thoughts on Pearce’s player reputation keeping him in the job, and after the mauling we gave them, the nottingham media barely mentioned they’d just had 5 put past them, but concentrated on the ” Billy Davis has been sacked by Notts Forest ” – it deflects the attention away from the result therefore taking a little gloss off it.
Hopes are very high amongst Derby fans for a result for a convincing win, but expecting us to emulate last seasons scoreline would be foolish. The team are up for it and morale is high.
Speaking on the midland footy forums, Notts forest fans are dreading the match.

I will be putting up a solid double on the game and I expect that as many of us made some good money from my last derby/Leeds double, I’m expecting a good deal more will be all over my tip come Friday.

  33. Suneil 9 years ago

Free bets….not best site as limited I play.. Bet bright. Place a 30 bet n if loses they will put money back into account. This doesn’t have to be re-used , you can actually take the thirty back to your bank! They then give you another tender free bet

Lads whats peoples opinion of 10bet bookmaker here i would like to hear experiences please

    • Mr Fixit 9 years ago

dawnrising, as you know 10bet sponsor the top tips so if you’re trying to stir it do it somewhere else. In my opinion they’ve don’t have enough markets and their prices overall (not always) need to be more competitive and admin have told them that.

    more than once.
don’t do the welcome bonus because it ridiculous.

dawnrising, it’s mrfixit@dailyrecord.co.uk – but let’s not start that kind of debate on a betting site. Your last comment wasn’t called for.

  39. Jamie 9 years ago

I asked sky for a free bet today after reading that post about it. They did take my user name and look into my account but came back and said no because I had a goodwill fiver yesterday because of problems I was effected by with bet tracker issues (it didn’t effect me at all) and that I was due a free £5 today from the bet club (It’s not free you pay £25 for it) they must have thought I was a right greedy B. Haha, worth a shot and I’d gladly take anything the bookies wanted to give me for free anyway! Might try again in a month haha.

  40. Jamie 9 years ago

Looks like there’s going to need to be another new thread for conspiracy theories haha

dawnrising, firstly it hasn’t arrived, secondly don’t believe everything you read and thirdly I don’t decide what goes in the paper and we only deal in facts anyway. To be honest this stuff isn’t for a betting site so you should take it elsewhere.

  43. dawnisrising 9 years ago

  44. Flickhead 9 years ago

Oh dear Nathan, from what ive seen of Warnock,he must have had that foot injury from the day he joined us.

    • nathan ufton 9 years ago

Lol. Personally don’t understand why Derby are seeking cover for Forsyth, whilst Forsyth isn’t the best left back, the number of attacks that generate from him bombing forward down the left flank with the ball puts him regularly in the championship team of the week.

Are you the fella that offered to buy me beers at the navigation after following my leeds tip?

  45. Wee Pat 9 years ago

Alrighty Mr Fixit is that free bet still up fur grabs if so can I get it :-)

“IF YOU DONT ASK YOU DONT GET” LOL

  46. Flickhead 9 years ago

Heres a question for you Mr F,one thats relevant to both of us at the moment. What is it that makes us keep going back for more, when our teams are crap? Its like a drug that no amount of rehab can get you off.
    Why do we do it?

    • Mr Fixit 9 years ago

Flickhead, I’ve been a fan of my team for nearly 40 years and basically just go every week. This has been our worst season for a long time but for me it’s how I spend my Saturday afternoons and while winning is more enjoyable I remember the one season my club didn’t exist and that was unbearable. So I can handle the defeats better now.

    • TamD 9 years ago

Comment of the day! I think you should keep that remaining free bet with you Mr. F. :)

  47. Flickhead 9 years ago

Thats a fair point Mr F,something i hope Leeds never go through, although weve been close a couple of times.I cant moan really, ive been all over Europe, seen us win a couple of titles, and had some good laughs, although the mrs didnt find it funny on occasions, mostly over finances.

    • Mr Fixit 9 years ago

Flickhead, furthest I’ve been with Clydebank is to Dublin when we played UCD in a friendly – and we won. Also watched us at Morecambe which is a bit like the Costa Brava without the weather and golden sands. Right,I better go – if I don’t get the birthday cake requested I’ll end up with egg and other things on my face.

  48. sanjay 9 years ago

Enjoy your daughters birthday Mr f. I have two young daughters at home and we daddies sure do spoil our daughters. Hoping to take my daughter to a Leicester City game soon. Get her into football early!

  49. nathan ufton 9 years ago

As Derby ponder on who is gonna fill the absent shoes of Eustace for Saturdays game, its been confirmed that George Thorne has resumed full training.
Thorne was brought in on loan last season and made his debut in the epic Derby/Forest game last year and kept Eustace warming the bench for the remainder of the season. We then duly signed him.
Although I doubt he’s anywhere near match fitness, it would be absolutely mint if he was ready to face forest.

With the ref confirmed, I’m just waiting on the betting markets to open up. IF the line is drawn in the sand and it fits well with my estimation, some preliminary estimations have concluded that my acca should be around 4.2/1 maybe a touch higher or lower.

    • nathan ufton 9 years ago

correction, I meant double, not acca. apologies.

  50. daz 9 years ago

What sports do people bet on ?

    • nathan ufton 9 years ago

For me? Footy 99% of the time. I’ve been busy pot-building in anticipation of my Saturday double, small odds, picking one or two off at a time, started yesterday with a tenner ended the day on £14.50. Today, I am almost up to £60, but the best success I’ve had today seems to be on ” No clean sheet kept “.

  51. sanjay 9 years ago

Nathan agree with the no clean sheet bet. Good value can be found for teams who score regularly but are away. Odds for home teams scoring can be around 1/5 but away can rise to 1/2. Also put two in a double and bobs your uncle. It’s a good strategy

  52. Flickhead 9 years ago

Nathan, yes it was me,i didnt think you’d mind sitting in a pub full of Leeds.Im on Derby straight win, just deciding on the handicap but cards seem more likely.

Derby should cover a handicap, and I’ve weighed up the -1 straight handicap vs the Asian -1.5 and the a/h is a better price. And gives you a little failsafe. Forest are literally on the ropes and they have to come at us to stand any hope of getting anything, and many have tried that method and most have failed. We’ve lost twice at home since March. Both Leeds at home and Middlesborough bullied Derby all over the pitch and the cards flowed and beat us. If Forest resort to that which I expect them to, cards will fly.
Looking back over the past 3 or 4 seasons, theres been a red card on either 2/4 games, but in some cases 2/3 games.
The ref allocated is 13th of 68 on the league table for handing out cards at a rate of 4.2 per game.
Typically games between the two teams are a cauldron of nasty tackles, I don’t wanna come off as biased BUT if you look at how many broken legs and cruciate knee ligament injuries have been caused by Forest players on Derby in the past, you’ll understand why I say Derby players tend to come off worse. Barker got his injury at Forest which has so far had him out for over 18 months, Junior – remember him – broken leg. Think Ward got a bad injury too against them.
Reid ( who ate all the pies ) isn’t available for forest – I’m assuming it clashes with his dinnertime, but it was announced today that Thorne is back in full training – he’s been doing selective training since October – wonder if McClaren is being economical with the truth about whether he’s ready – if he is and he goes straight into the squad, the psychological boost we’d get from that has got to be worth a goal.

Way too many people are expecting another 5 nil, but lets not forget that scoreline was the biggest against them in our entire history, can you really see us winning by that margain again? I can’t. But it would be nice.

We’ve also had 4 clean sheets on the bounce, and all through last season, we were conceding when we won games so that’s another consideration. We’re 4 goals behind Bournmouth, forest are playing aweful football and ours seems to be steadily improving since xmas.
A little sidenote about that last derby v forest home game, forest had hit some form when we played them, and our form was up and down.
Over xmas, Didn’t Birmingham beat forest 4-2? we played that exact same Birmingham side a week later after they had raised their game and we put 4 past them.

Chris Martin is on fire at the moment, 2nd in the list of championship top scorers and he’s our dedicated penalty taker…. to score anytime?? I’d expect so.
Bryson got a hatrick against them, yet he seems to be playing a subs role so far for us and he’s way behind on his rate of scoring from last season.

I haven’t even mentioned Darren bent who has scored on every debut for every club he’s played for. We have not played him yet. If we find ourselves in a similar commanding position by the 60 min mark, I can see him pitching in with a goal.

I’m still waiting on the market to open on that game/bets and to see where the line is drawn in the sand by the bookies, I expect that to be Friday.

Anybody remember “HAVE YOUR SAY” on teletext quite a few years ago? it was about the only source of betting info for me, loved it, apart from the record on a tuesday for mr fixits tips (I lived in hertfordshire at the time and had to order) oh how things have changed, now we have a wealth of info on hand to help us in our battle against the bookies.
