St Johnstone vs Rangers

, KO: 12:15 Sep 22, 2019, McDiarmid Park
Rangers

RANGERS end a hugely emotional week with a tricky trip to McDiarmid Park to take on an improving St Johnstone side.

The tragic loss of former player Fernando Ricksen before Thursday's game with Feyenoord made the Europa League opener at Ibrox particularly poignant.

In the build-up to that clash, Steven Gerrard and his players insisted they were determined to put on a show in honour of Ricksen and they were as good as their word.

Rangers swarmed all over the Dutch side at Ibrox and deserved to win by a far more comfortable scoreline than a single-goal margin.

It was the perfect start to a tough group that also includes Porto and Swiss side Young Boys but now Gerrard's side must return their focus to the Premiership.

An Old Firm defeat on home soil has left Rangers playing catch-up and their journey to Perth is a potential banana skin off the back of such a draining European night.

St Johnstone were in disarray at the start of the season, losing to lowly Forfar and Montrose in their League Cup group before opening the Premiership with a 7-0 hiding by Celtic.

But they have improved since then, showing the trademark qualities of a Tommy Wright side, and three of their last four games have ended in draws.

The last one came at Pittodrie against decent Aberdeen side and I wouldn't be hugely surprised if this match also ended in a stalemate, which is 9/2 with Betfred.

Gerrard will definitely make a few changes in a bid to freshen up his side but this could turn into a slog like both of Rangers' away days in the league so far this season.

It took a last-gasp Connor Goldson goal to seal a 2-1 win at Kilmarnock then only a Borna Barisic free-kick sealed a 1-0 victory at St Mirren.

That trip to Paisley came after another Europa League night in Warsaw and I thought Rangers would find it tough, tipping Gerrard's side to prevail after a level first half in a match with under 2.5 goals.

It paid off nicely with Barisic netting the only goal in the second half and a repeat could be on the cards here. Rangers to win after a level first half is 10/3 with Marathonbet while under 2.5 strikes is 119/100 with the same firm.

McDiarmid Park has been a happy hunting ground for Gers in recent seasons, winning on eight of their last nine visits and drawing the other time.

Four of those victories have been by a one-goal margin and that has been the same for both of Rangers' away days in the Premiership this season. I can see a repeat here and one-goal winning margin for Gerrard's side is 11/4 with Boylesports.

Saints have fared far better at Ibrox, winning two and drawing one of their last five games in Govan, and their home form has been poor this season.

Even though Rangers were totally dominant on Thursday, they almost ended up throwing victory away, with Allan McGregor making some fine saves late on to deny Feyenoord.

They still look a little suspect at the back so both teams to score in Perth could be a decent option at 57/50 with 888 Sport.

In the goalscorer markets, it's probably best to wait until Gerrard names his team before picking someone from Rangers. But I think Joe Aribo will start after coming off the bench on Thursday and the midfielder is a decent 7/2 with Paddy Power to net at anytime.

The biggest danger for Saints should be Michael O'Halloran and the winger has extra motivation after his ill-fated spell at Ibrox. O'Halloran is as big as 7/1 with Unibet to net at anytime and that looks well worth a punt.
