JUST when Southampton fans thought their season couldn't get any worse, along came Grimsby Town to heap further shame and embarrassment on them this week.
And they face a team who are going through almost as bad a spell as them on Saturday night when Leicester City visit St Mary's.
The Saints were bundled out of the FA Cup in midweek by lowly Grimsby who reached the quarter-finals for the first time in 84 years. It should have been a penalty kick for Ruben Selles' new charges, but they blew it.
In truth, Southampton would accept that if it meant saving their Premier League skins and there were encouraging signs when they stunned Chelsea at Stamford Bridge a couple of weeks ago to complete a double against them.
But they then went and lost at Leeds United to remain adrift at the bottom of the table and four points from safety. Southampton's record at St Mary's is beyond awful – they have won just once in the league there this season and that was back in August.
However, the Foxes have plenty of problems of their own after a FA Cup disaster of their own when Blackburn Rovers dumped them out. They looked like they had turned the corner with three wins in a row, but then lost to Manchester United and Arsenal which is fair enough and Rovers…which is not.
How the bookies view it
Leicester City are only just favourites marginally and can be backed at 17/10 with SBK.
Southampton are 20/11 with the same firm, with both of them top prices. The draw is 9/4 with William Hill.
Recent head to heads
Southampton pulled off one of their rare league wins back in August when they went to the King Power and won 2-1.
But Leicester are unbeaten on their last five visits to St Mary's and one of those wins was their famous 9-0 success in 2019.
Players to watch
James Ward-Prowse netted the winner for Saints at Chelsea the other week and has done extremely well to score eight goals from midfield in all competitions this season., He is 17/4 with UniBet.
Nigerian hitman Kelechi Iheanacho has been in decent form for the Foxes recently with four goals in his last six games. He is 13/5 to score anytimg with bet365.
Anything else catch the eye?
Confidence will be low with both teams but at least Leicester can say they lost to Manchester United and Arsenal on their recent poor run and they look like they have more quality.
Southampton can't buy a win at St Mary's and Leicester can inflict more disappointment here at a surprisingly big price considering Saints have lost ten of their last 12 league games.
With Leicester only three points off the drop zone, this could be a nervy affair. Four of Southampton's last five games have seen only one team to score so try the both teams to score: No market at 23/20 with BetVictor.
