SCHALKE'S slump shows no sign of ending and boss David Wagner's future will come under intense scrutiny if they crash to another defeat against struggling Werder Bremen.
I tipped Fortuna Dusseldorf to pile on the misery for Schalke in midweek and they delivered with a 2-1 win on a night when all three of my recommended bets came up.
That made it three straight defeats since the Bundesliga's return and Wanger hasn't tasted victory in the league since January 17, a horror run of 10 games.
Head of sport Jochen Schneider publicly backed the former Huddersfield boss earlier this week but if Wagner doesn't turn things around soon then the fans could be in open revolt.
Werder Bremen's form since coming out of cold storage has been much better, with a heavy defeat at home to Leverkusen followed by a 1-0 win at Freiburg (below) and a stalemate with high-flying Monchengladbach.
But the fallen giants remain six points adrift of safety and will be targeting a win against free-falling Schalke to spark their great escape.
How the bookies view it
Despite their awful run, Schalke remain slight favourites for this one at a best 13/8 with VBet. Werder have more to play for so I will be backing them at 9/5 with Bet365 even though a draw also appeals at 47/17 with VBet.
Recent head to head
Schalke won 2-1 in Bremen earlier in the season but the four games before that all ended in victories for Werder. They have won on their last three visits to Gelsenkirchen, with Schalke's last home win coming in 2016.
There hasn't been a stalemate in his fixture since a 1-1 draw in Gelsenkirchen five years ago.
Players to watch
Schalke's problems have increased with Suat Serdar picking up an injury that will rule him out of the rest of the season. They've only scored two goals in eight games and both came from midfielder Weston McKennie, who's 23/4 for another goal here with 888Sport.
Werder playmaker Leonardo Bittencourt has five for the season and is 9/2 with Bet365 for a goal here. He seems to be struggling for match fitness, either playing for an hour then being subbed or having to come off the bench, but remains a threat.
Anything else catch the eye?
I'd be surprised if there were a lot of goals in this one as Werder have been keeping it tight at the back while Schalke can't buy a goal. Under 2.5 goals is 10/11 with Bet365 and that should come up.
William Hill are offering 6/5 on each team picking up over one card and that looks good value given both sides are desperate for a win. The same firm price Werder winning over one corner in each half at 13/10 and I will have a nibble at that.
