San Diego and Toronto will go head-to-head in the early hours of Thursday, 17 July. San Diego will host the game at Snapdragon Stadium.
The hosts enter this game as the top seed in the Western Conference, although both Minnesota and Vancouver are close by and waiting for their chance to take them over. Still, San Diego are having an impressive season considering it is their first one in the MLS. They are also in great form at the moment having won five of their last six games in the league, so they are in a great position going forward.
Meanwhile, Toronto are on the opposite end of the spectrum this season since they're currently second-last in the Eastern Conference, with just 18 points from 21 games. They have been doing ok lately, with just one loss in the last four games, but overall, their chances of making the playoffs are far from great.
How the bookies view it: Toronto given little chance to avoid a loss
As expected, San Diego are heavily favoured to win this game, with 3/10 odds at BoyleSports. Toronto's win is priced at a whopping 13/2, while a draw comes with 4/1 odds, all at BoyleSports.
Recent head-to-head: Never met before
Given that San Diego are a new team in the league and in their first season in the MLS, this will be the first time for them to meet with Toronto.
Players to watch: Anders Dreyer leading San Diego to the top
While we could mention a few players who clearly contributed to the surprising rise of San Diego to the top of the Western Conference, like Milan Iloski who scored 10 goals in just 14 starts for the team, it is Anders Dreyer who is driving San Diego to success this season.
The Danish winger is in the Top 10 scorers in the league so far with 11 goals, but he also has 13 assists on top of that. All in all, it's been an impressive season for him and Dreyer to score at any time at even odds seems quite tempting.
Predicted line-ups
San Diego are dealing with a few injuries and Anisse Saidi, Marcus Ingvartsen, Anibal Godoy, and William Kumado will all miss this game because of it.
On the other side, Toronto will also miss a few injured players, namely Nicksoen Gomis, Zane Monlouis, Jonathan Osorio, and Henry Wingo.
San Diego: Sisniega, Verhoeven, McVey, Pilcher, Bombino, Valakari, De la Torre, Tverskov, Dreyer, Angel, Lozano
Toronto: Johnson, Laryea, Long, Rosted, Petretta, Coello, Flores, Corbeanu, Dominguez, Etienne, Brynhildsen
Anything else catch the eye?
While San Diego have been impressive this season, their success so far has mostly been due to their amazing offence. On the other side of the pitch, they haven't been as great, as evidenced by the fact that they've conceded at least once in their last five games in a row, and in four of those games they conceded multiple goals. So, both teams to score at 8/11 odds at BoyleSports sounds like a smart bet.
That being said, San Diego should still win this game handily, considering their great form and Toronto's struggles this season. The odds on San Diego to win by two or more goals at BoyleSports are 20/23, which is quite tempting.
