It is a straight shootout for top spot in Group I as Romania host Switzerland in the European Championship qualifiers. Both teams have already secured a place in Germany and with very little on the line, they could be set to cancel each other out for a draw.
Romania head into Tuesday’s clash off the back of a 2-1 victory over Israel in their previous qualifying fixture. They fought back from an early setback with goals in each half from George Puscas and Ianis Hagi earning them the win.
That was the third win in four qualifying matches for Romania, who have now earned a place in next year’s tournament in Germany. They are two points clear at the top of the standings but have not yet secured top spot in Group I and will need to avoid defeat in Tuesday’s clash.
A hallmark of Romania’s qualifying campaign is their solid record on home soil. Edward Iordanescu’s men are unbeaten in front of their fans throughout the qualifiers, claiming three wins and playing out one draw in four matches.
A 1-1 home draw with Kosovo in their previous qualifying fixture was enough to see Switzerland secure a place in Euro 2024. They took the lead just after the restart through Ruben Vargas and held on for long periods before the visitors struck the equaliser eight minutes from time.
That result, along with Romania’s win means Switzerland are now second on the table, two points off the pace. Murat Yakin’s men still have a chance of finishing top of Group I but must claim the win at the National Arena on Tuesday.
While Switzerland will be pleased to have qualified for Germany, their recent form may be worrisome. They have drawn five of their last six qualifying fixtures, throwing away the lead in all five matches.
