Relegation-threatened Angers set on a long trip to face title contenders Marseille, who need an immediate response to the two consecutive defeats they suffered last week.
The Olympians went through a bad week, losing to both Sporting CP and Lens, which put an end to their five-match winning streak. The most negative consequence of the latest defeat is that Marseille lost their leading position in Ligue 1, now trailing PSG by two points.
This does not change the fact that Marseille are the highest-scoring team in the league and have the second-strongest defence. Their fans will be expecting a strong performance, given that Marseille won all four of their home games in the league so far, with a goal difference of 16:4.
On the other side of the pitch, Angers finally won a match, temporarily escaping the relegation zone. However, their performance so far does not suggest the start of a winning streak, and it is highly likely that they will taste defeat again on Wednesday.
Angers are still without an away win this season, having lost three of their four fixtures. And they are also one of the two teams with the fewest goals scored in the league (6), tied with last-placed Metz.
How the bookies view it: The Olympians to extend their win streak at home
Bookmakers see only one possible outcome from this match, and that is a resounding victory for the hosts. The odds are at both extremes, with Marseille available at 1/4 and Angers at 12/1. Additionally, the draw is available at 11/2.
Recent head-to-head: Marseille are unbeaten in seven
While Angers have been a constant in Ligue 1 over the last few years, they’ve never had much luck against Marseille. Their last win over the Olympians dates back to 2020, while they lost five of the last seven H2Hs since then (D2). They somehow managed to steal a point last term at this stadium, but it will be much harder this time.
Players to watch: Greenwood is unstoppable
Mason Greenwood has simply been elite over the last few weeks, but it was expected after his 21 league goals last season. To be more precise, Greenwood scored five goals in the last two Ligue 1 rounds. And overall, he already has eight goals and four assists to his name across all competitions this season (12 appearances).
We plan to back him to score against Angers, but Betano also have a solid offer for him to score or assist at 13/20.
Probable line-ups
Marseille: Rulli, Emerson, Aguerd, Balerdi, Pavard, O’Riley, Hojbjerg, Paixao, Gomes, Greenwood, Aubameyang
Angers: Koffi, Arcus, Camara, Lefort, Hanin, Belkebla, Abdelli, Belkhdim, Mouton, Sbai, Peter
Anything else catch the eye?
Apart from the 1-0 win over PSG, Marseille’s home matches this season have been extreme. They scored 4+ goals in all four other matches at Stade Velodrome, most recently crushing Le Havre 6-2.
While we can’t expect another eight-goal thriller, we definitely expect Marseille to win on Wednesday and do it with style. Marseille & Over 2.5 goals sounds like a solid pick, but we also believe that BTTS is valid too.
We’ve seen the Olympians concede late after guaranteeing the three points. For example, Le Havre scored their second goal in added time with 10 men.
