Inter Milan are looking to snap out of a slump and re-ignite their title charge as they host Salernitana in a Friday night Serie A fixture. Things have not been particularly smooth for the champions lately but they will still fancy their chances against the bottom side.
Inter Milan head into Friday’s clash off the back of a 0-0 draw with local rivals AC Milan in their Coppa Italia semi-final first leg clash. It was a similar scoreline in their previous Serie A fixture as they were held at struggling Genoa.
Both results are a pointer to Inter Milan’s recent form as they are winless in their last five matches across all competitions. Despite their slump, the champions remain in the title race and can climb to the top with a win on Friday.
Although things have been a bit rough at the San Siro lately, Inter Milan will still be feeling confident ahead of the visit of Salernitana. They still do some good work at home and have won seven of their last nine Serie A matches in front of their fans.
Salernitana remain rooted to the bottom of the standings and increasingly look likely to take the plunge as the season progresses. They are currently 10 points from safety and need to start picking up points to stand any chance of survival.
Davide Nicola’s men were held to a 1-1 draw by Bologna in their previous Serie A fixture for their fourth consecutive draw. While they will be pleased to have stemmed the tide of defeats, their survival could hinge on how quickly those results can be turned into wins.
One of the problems that has hampered Salernitana is their poor record on the road having claimed just two wins on their travels this season. Some of their heaviest defeats have come away from home, including a 4-0 loss at Fiorentina while they were also beaten 4-1 by Napoli.
How the bookies view it
Despite their recent problems, Inter Milan are still considered overwhelming favourites among the bookies at 1/6 with betway. An unlikely victory for Salernitana is valued at 22/1 by SBK who are also offering odds of 39/5 for a draw.
Recent head to head
It was a 5-0 victory for Inter Milan in the reverse fixture back in December with Alexis Sanchez, Lautaro Martinez and Ivan Perisic all among the goals.
Players to watch
Lautaro Martinez has gone off the boil in recent weeks but remains the leading scorer for Inter Milan with 11 goals and still carries a major attacking threat. The Argentine striker was on target in the reverse fixture and is priced at 17/20 by Betfred to get on the score sheet.
Federico Bonazzoli is the leading scorer for Salernitana with eight goals and could be worth keeping an eye on. The striker has also found the net twice in his last three matches and is priced at 11/2 by Paddy Power to score anytime.
Anything else catch the eye?
Inter Milan claimed a 5-0 victory in the reverse fixture and with a similar one-sided encounter expected, a -2 handicap can be considered at 5/4 with Paddy Power. They also won both halves in that fixture and could be set for a repeat at 6/5 with betfair.
Four of Lautaro Martinez’s goals this season have been the opener and the striker could be tipped to score first goal on Friday at 7/2 with SBK.
