Dortmund’s defeat to Bayer Leverkusen left the team out of the Top 6 and their task this season became much more difficult. Holstein Kiel are in a far worse position at the very bottom of the table, and need a miracle to survive.
The Storks played an unbelievable match against Augsburg and ended the year on a high. But the positive vibes from that 5-1 win were shortlived. The new year began with a tough 3-2 defeat at Freiburg and the team remains in the depths of hell, a.k.a the bottom of the table. They are six points away from safety and will be hoping Dortmund’s bad form extends to this fixture.
On the other end, BVB saw the end of two incredible streaks when they lost to Bayer Leverkusen. They suffered their first home defeat this season, which also ended their 20-year-long undefeated streak at home on Fridays, which spanned 37 games.
Things get worse when you look at their away record this season. Signal Iduna Park has always been their stronghold but one win in seven away games is a horrible stat for a team of their calibre.
How the bookies view it: Dortmund can't lose as favourites again
Despite their poor away form, BVB are overwhelming favourites against Holstein Kiel. After all, the hosts are with one foot in the lower tier right now. The Storks are available at 9/2 and Dortmund are sitting at 1/2. Alternatively, you can pick the draw at 15/4.

As this is their debut season in the elite, Holstein Kiel have never faced Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. The teams have met twice for the DFB Pokal and BVB came out on top on both occasions. The first one dates back to 2012 and ended 0-4, while the more recent one is from 2021 (5-0).
Players to watch: Gittens or Guirassy (or both)
Whether you pick Jamie Gittens or Serhou Guirassy, both have a fairly equal chance to score. Guirassy is a better pick because he takes Dortmund’s penalties. Gittens is a better pick in terms of form. He wasn’t too active in December but scored goals in four consecutive games recently, and also scored the opener against Bayer Leverkusen last week.

Curiously, Dortmund won for the first time away in late December, in their final Bundesliga game of the year. And they get the perfect opportunity to make it back-to-back wins on the road for the first time this season.
Holstein Kiel should not present a challenge. Especially after the home defeat to Leverkusen, BVB should be desperate for the three points. And Holstein concede an average of 2.5 goals at home this season.
Curiously enough, Borussia Dortmund also concede an average of two goals per match on the road. Weaker teams managed to score against them and Holstein Kiel will have their chances too. We would put our money on the Over here or combine it in a bet builder with Dortmund’s win. The separate odds are insignificant as bookies expect the same.
