Dinamo Tblisi vs AstanaUEFA Champions League, KO: 17:00 Jul 19, 2023, Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena
Dinamo Tblisi host Astana in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League first round qualifier with the tie still in the balance. Both teams appear evenly matched at the moment and with nothing to separate them, another closely fought encounter could be on the cards.
Dinamo Tblisi will be pleased to have come away with a 1-1 draw from last week’s first leg with Astana. Gabriel Sigua’s second half effort was enough to earn them a share of the spoils, although they had to withstand wave after wave of attack from the hosts to hold on for the draw.
Manager Giorgi Tchiabishvili will be pleased with Dinamo Tblisi’s overall showings lately as last week’s result means they are now unbeaten in their last four matches across all competitions. However, a closer look shows that they have been plagued by draws lately having been held 1-1 in their last three matches.
Dinamo Tblisi will head into Wednesday’s clash feeling confident about completing the job in front of their fans as they have lost just once in their last seven home matches across all competitions. However, they have been held four times in that run, including 1-1 draws in the last two fixtures.
Astana will be disappointed to have settled for a draw from the first leg after dominating much of the encounter. They looked set for a comfortable win following Abat Aymbetov’s early opener but failed to build on their lead and went on to miss several goalscoring opportunities.
While manager Giorgi Babayan will be disappointed not to have seen out the win, the result means Astana have lost just once in their last 17 matches across all competitions. They have claimed 12 wins in that run, although a bulk of those matches have been against domestic teams in Kazakhstan.
Regardless of the quality of opposition they have faced recently, Astana will still head into Wednesday’s clash with plenty of confidence, especially given their away record. They are unbeaten in 21 of their last 22 matches on the road, although their only defeat in that run was a 2-0 loss to Ordabasy in a domestic fixture prior to last week’s first leg.
