JOHN JELLEY became John Jolly when he banked a bumper £345,126 win on the horses.

He became Britain’s biggest elderly jackpot winner at the weekend from a £9 bet placed in his local Ladbrokes in South Wales.

Jelley, 88 wasn’t even aware of his huge win after falling asleep and forgetting to check the results.

He only found out when he returned to Ladbrokes the next day to place his usual bet.  The winning horses included Forget it at 1211 which he included due to his dodgy memory.

He only started betting three years ago aged 85 to pass the time after he broke his wrist and bets solely on names without studying the form.

John plans to celebrate his win by going on a cruise eight miles along the coast before returning in time for his favourite supper of sausages & mash.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “John is living proof that big wins come to those who wait. We've never known anybody to be so old and so lucky.”
