Top Football Tips

IT'S a big night of football with the resumption of the Champions League taking pride of place.

First up is an all-English battle between Spurs and Man City while Ajax entertain Juventus. I've posted my thoughts on both games in a Champions League preview.

And kevinmac has previewed both games – so check them out here. His thoughts on Ajax v Juventus are similar to mine and we're both going strong on a Liverpool success. His Anfield preview is here.

Elsewhere there is the first part of a full midweek English Championship card and I'll be taking a close look at the games in the morning. Usual problem for me is too many games and a lot Iike so it's a matter of picking out the right ones.

In League One Sunderland v Burton is the big game and while the home men have put themselves into a good position they won't get it easy against a side who beat Barnsley at the weekend and are in good form. Burton have netted 11 in three successive wins while the home men have hit nine in four.

There are big games in the Scottish Championship affecting the top and bottom. Ross County can all but clinch the title with a home win against Dunfermline and I've decided to back them as the Super Single at 6-5 with Betway.

They've beaten the Pars, who have little to play for, three times this season and recent home form is excellent. That injury-time equaliser against Dundee Utd on Friday was crucial and took some pressure off and County can perform well tonight as a result.

Just four points separate the bottom five and of the sides go down automatically. Alloa gave their hopes a massive lift with a stunning win at Falkirk on Saturday and travel to a Morton side nervously looking over their shoulder.

Alloa are pretty big at 13-5 with Marathonbet and I can see them avoiding defeat. Queen of the South are still in trouble and could pick up something at an Ayr side safely in the play-offs.

For a Top Treble I'm taking Alloa +1, Swansea and Derby +1. The Rams face a Blackburn side with four defeats in five and it looks like two from Derby, Bristol City and Aston Villa for the final play-off spots. Reckon Derby will win but playing safer with +1.

It was a toss-up between Swansea and Sheff Wed for the third pick but I'm going with the Swans who have won two home games in a row convincingly and tackle a Stoke side whose weekend win ended a run of 0-0 draws. Swansea have only pride to play for but are playing well with Wales winger Dan James in top form.

On Sunday night I'd planned to do a Chelsea/Bologna double but then added Hamburg and it was the Germans who let me down for a treble with a terrible defeat at home to Madgeburg.

Well done to all the winners including Greg who alerted a lot of people to the fact Rangers reserves were a massive 8-1 at home to Hibs – even though team news suggested they'd be weakened. And one of kevinmac's tips was Hazard to score and what a first goal that was.

2pts Super Single

1pt Top Treble

  • Swansea
  • Derby +1
  • Alloa +1
  • (24-5, Marathonbet)

1pt Both to Score Treble

  • Nimes v Rennes (6pm)
  • Sunderland v Burton
  • Morton v Alloa
  • (5-1, bet365)

Telford v Altrincham BTTS – NAP

14/18 of Telford’s home games have seen BTTS and have failed to keep a clean sheet in the last 9 home games. Telford also seen there last 10 games BTTS. 12/18 Altrincham’s away games have seen BTTS failing to score in just 2 away games and fresh of the back of a 7-0 win on Saturday. 5 out of the 7 h2h between these two have been BTTS.

    Macclesfield v Exeter BTTS

A big game at both ends of the table. 14/20 of Macclesfields home games have seen BTTS including there last 8 at home. 11/20 of Exeter’s away games have seen BTTS which isn’t as strong but 5 of there last 6 away games have seen BTTS.

    • alex_mufc83 5 years ago

agree with you re: Altrincham. it’s a big game as both teams fight for a play off spot. hoping for another solid away win for the Alty!

    • renwick 5 years ago

Very true mate, lets hope for goals!

    • alex_mufc83 5 years ago

last time they met it was a 3-1 Alty win, a repeat would be nice. I think Alty will get another away win with both to score.

Santos appear to be dominating Corinthians in Brazil. Still 0-0 and the sp was 17/20, price is a juicy 20/21 in-play with bet365.

    • nathanufton 5 years ago

85th minute and Santos have opened the scoring. 11 – 0 shots on target, 14 – 3 shots off, 73% possession, 138 – 45 dangerous attacks. And only 1 nil. If it stays the same, I’ll be happy.

Uganda is not a league renowned for goals but one team caught my eye couple of months ago and had a bit of success with them since.

Uganda Police are the team and after 25 rounds of matches they’re the only side out of 16 in the division too average over 3 goals per game, this is highlighted by them being the 2nd highest scorers(37) with the second worst defence(40) in the league. They’ve scored in 21 & conceded in 21 of 25 matches with 18 having seen BTTS land & 16 of those 18 seeing 3+ goals which gives a 64% success rate of this market being successful. They’ve played 12 at home and BTTS has landed in 10/12 with 8 of those seeing 3+ goals which again is over 60% success rate. The away side don’t scream goals with one of the lowest in the league but I’m putting my faith in the home teams ability to score and inability to keep a clean sheet.

    BTTS and o2.5gls – 2/1

Im adding 2 matches from the AFC Cup in a treble with the above

    BTTS and o2.5gls treble

    Uganda Police v Onduparaka FC – 2/1
    Gyeongnam FC v Kashima Antlers – 1/1
    Al-Rayyan v Al-Wahda Abu Dhabi – 10/11

    10/1

Been looking forward to the return of the champions league for a few weeks now, (the proper one, not the euro version that all English clubs think they will win but inevitably gets won by the Spanish) and before the competition started I pointed out don’t be fooled into backing sides from the “big” countries at short prices away to burinam. They duly obliged last time out by beating big hitters jeonbuk and to my mind are overpriced today to take care of Chinese side Beijing guoan. This makes taking them on double chance appealing.

Can’t see a Spanish team winning the proper champions league this year mate.If Liverpool meet Barca they will kick their arses,i’m in no doubt about that.

    • sean567 5 years ago

tongue in cheek above of course- its fairly open this year, and I expect the 4 semi finalists to be barca, Liverpool, juve and man city. if that’s the case then for me its tough to pick a winner.

Having a wee look at tonights referees in the Champions League and it’s Spaniard Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz at Anfield. He averages just under 5 yellows per match with 128 dished out in 26 but he’s went a bit card happy of late with 39Y & 1R in his last 6 including 10 on Sunday between Alaves and Levante. Main suspect for Porto will be defender Felipe who’s no stranger to a card having collected 35Y & 3R since arriving in Portugal in July 2017,coincidentally he was red carded 7 days ago after a double booking at Braga in the Cup.

As Mr F mentions in his write up Ross County can all but win the league by beating my team, Dunfermline, at home tonight.
The Pars season effectively ended on Saturday when we surrendered a two goal lead away at Partick killing any thought of us troubling the promotion play off spots and resigning us to mid table mediocrity.
So tonight County have everything to play for against a Dunfy team running down the clock on a ‘meh’ season and there will be a huge clear out at East End over the summer.

-County have owned us this season, winning all 3 games and scoring at least twice each time: 1-3, 2-1, 1-2.
-County have scored at least twice in 10 of 15 home games including 6 of the last 7.

Indian Super Cup action again today, and the last few rounds have been goal-fests, two of which I tipped.

Last round Goa saw off Jamshedpur 4-3, whilst Chennai beat Bengaluru 2-1.

    4PM – Chennai City v Goa

Goa are the bookies favourites, but Chennai should give it a good go and both sides should contribute to goals.

All things considered, odds are high on this fixture for goals and Over 2.5 looks decent value.

UTC fell a goal short last night – final score 2-0 and just needed that 3rd team effort but never came…LOST.

Looking ahead to tonight and like the look of one ‘normal’ goals double and two wilder ones for a couple of longer shots:

    Leyton Orient
    AFC Fylde

    Over 1.5 team goals
    (2.43/1, bet365) 2 Points

    Leyton Orient
    Blyth Spartans
    Farsley Athletic

    Over 2.5 team goal treble

    Liverpool v Porto:

VVD to score a header + Salah to score from outside the penalty area

    Best of luck 👍

  12. Parcelona 5 years ago

A treble I’ve stuck on for later with a bit of thought.

    Nimes v Rennes
Nimes have scored and conceded in 5 of their last 6 home games. 3 of those saw both teams score.
Rennes have scored and conceded in 5 of their last 6 away matches. 4 of those games saw both teams score.
The teams sit side by side in the table with only two points separating them in 10th and 11th and happy to take a punt on btts here at 7/10.

    Morton v Alloa
Alloa making a great scrap of it at the bottom of the Scottish Championship and in their last few games they’ve scored at Dundee Utd, scored twice in Inverness, beaten league leaders Ross County at home and on Saturday beat fellow strugglers Falkirk 2-1 away.
Hopefully they’ll manage a goal against a Morton side that have conceded in each of their last 5 @ 1/2.

    Liverpool v Porto
Liverpool should comfortably cover the -1 handicap @ 8/11 at home to Porto as reasoned by Mr F, Macca etc.

    Treble
    18.00 – Nimes v Rennes Btts 7/10

Always watch the thread and thought it’s time to stick my neck on the line with what I fancy.

Wycombe v Charlton – Charlton win 23/20 skybet.

Wycombe come into this with no win in 11 and sit 19th While Charlton have not been defeated in there last 9 winning 5 and sit 5th.

Maidstone v Barnet – Barnet win 1/1 skeybet

Maidstone bottom of the league worst home form in the division with 10 points all season take in a rejuvenated Barnet team who have not lost in 8 and kept 7 clean sheets in that period.

    Double pays 3.3/1 GL

    • david-footystats 5 years ago

Both are not on the best of runs. Barnet have picked up 5 points from the last 5 games, failing to score in the last two. Maidstone have only managed 1 point.

    • Mr Fixit 5 years ago

Don’t think those stats are correct – Barnet look unbeaten in 7 and before that lost to Fylde on penalties in the FA Trophy.

    • david-footystats 5 years ago

Yes sorry, 1 point in 5 for Maidstone, Barnet have infact picked up 11 in the last five league matches.

    • stevens97 5 years ago

I’m a maidstone fan and we’ve been well and truly poor this season. Barnet should turn us over easily

  16. davalarr1 5 years ago

Been looking at stats all morning and doing something different today.

    Bristol City – West Brom
Both teams have scored a bunch of their goals in the Championship this season in the 2nd half and with both in the playoff spots I fancy most of the action to unfold after the break.
    HWMG- 2nd Half
    21/20

    Tottenham – Man City
Again in the Champions league this season no other teams have scored more 2nd half goals than these two. Expecting a tight 1st half as both sides will try to boss possession and control the game so taking the 2nd half to see most action.

Snooker World Championship Qualifiers Section 8
    (Starts Wednesday)

    Yan Bingtao 11/8

    Lee Walker 12/1

    Harvey Chandler 150/1
    Florian Nuessle 500/1

recently I have dropped everything to study for the Masters Golf and Snooker World Championship and for the World Championship Qualifiers Peter Ebdon has to be the best bet of the 16 sections, Ebdon is throwing everything into qualifying here after a near miss last year when beat by Ryan Day 10-6 in the final match, that was after beating James Wattana 10-4 and Robbie Williams 10-5
This year which could be his final season Ebdon will take on Harvey Chandler in round one then either Giorgiou or Walker in round two so he wouldn’t play Yan Bingtao or Mei Xiwen till the final, this has to be a big bet on a confident selection on a player that is having a decent season, runner-up in the Paul Hunter Classic and Last 8 in the Northern Ireland Open

Hi lads, one for an investment here. Not many footballers are doing things that Raheem Sterling is doing, and I’m not talking about on the pitch. Having an excellent season on it, but off he’s handling racism, paying tributes to cancer patients, and paying for pupils to attend games.

He has been absolutely smashed down in the last couple of weeks for SPOTY. You’ll be lucky if you’re getting better than 11/1 now, but some books still showing 16’s on odds checker. Worth the punt imo as he’ll only keep doing these things while leading up to the event 👍🏻

    • Mr Fixit 5 years ago

Interesting – I’m not a big fan of SPOTY but I get what you’re saying.

    • maccathered 5 years ago

Yeah he’s doing it to promote himself and nothing else,a bit like Mata donating 1 percent of his wages to charity, but then claims it all back in tax allowances, this is why they do it save money and make themselves look good in the process.

    • Mr Fixit 5 years ago

To be fair he doesn’t need to do it and has spoken well about racism.

    • alex_mufc83 5 years ago

alright Jordan, hope all’s well. not a bad shout at all that

    • maccathered 5 years ago

He’s spoken well about Racism, but that has been about for years it’s not just suddenly appeared,i don’t condone Racism one bit but he’s playing the card,John Barnes was subject to a lot more than he has been subject to but like a true professional Barnes got on with it.

    • recoba 5 years ago

Like a true professional(true An field legend) he just got on with it? F#@k you on about Maca it was a bit different back then and ad Mr F says Sterling could do nothing, should he just shut his mouth about racist chants and do his job?

    • maccathered 5 years ago

It was worse back then, why does Sterling need to get involved, let the authorities deal with it,yes he should just get on with his job that would be the smartest thing to do,the money they are on they could call me what they want,Racism is few and far between nowadays, there’s always going to be morons like anything in life but now these morons are dealt with,it;s not for sterling to say what punishment the offenders should receive.

    • Mr Fixit 5 years ago

It’s been creeping back into the game, certainly up here, and been a fair few instances highlighted recently.
Sterling’s been abused so let him have his say.

    Full Time – Chennai City 0 – 3 Goa

NAP lands, speculatives didn’t but was all about the main bet with the large stake. Loads of corners again too (15), another market that’s generally good in these games.

Really looking forward to tonight. City will likely control things but I expect Spurs to have positive spells of the game where things are a little erratic and the crowd are behind them. This could lead to a trusty midfielder getting his name in the ref’s notebook. He got 30 minutes at Wembley on the weekend and I fancy him to pick up a card here.

Derby team news: 2 changes – Cole in for Malone, Bryson in for Holmes

    Roos
    Bogle/Tomori/Keogh/Cole
    Bryson/Johnson/Mount
    Lawrence/Waghorn/Wilson

We’re at sh*t or bust time if we want to finish top 6. With 9 goals in our last 2 matches, it is tough to look beyond a Derby win facing a side that’s lost 9 of their last 11. If Derby don’t turn up the dial and find some consistent wins, we’ll be swallowed up by those chasing down a top 6.

    My treble tonight is:
    bet365
Derby, Liverpool and Mr F’s Ross County pick.

Returns around 8/1. Derby are a juicy 31/20 for the win, but if you’re after safety, following Mr F’s lead on his +1 Derby pick at the weekend might tempt you.
    Good luck tonight guys.

@Maccathered, Raheem Sterling is a young man earning an obscene amount of money because of his talent, you wouldn’t knock it back and neither would I. This guy and every black player takes abuse probably every week but at least sometime in their careers which is disgraceful. To see somebody who has been so vilified by millions of ‘fans’ over his short career respond the way he has should be respected and applauded. Every EPL player could afford to buy some tickets week in week out for some kids and make their day but they don’t do it. I wonder if you would of made your comments if he was still wearing a Liverpool shirt, I very much doubt it…Because he is a Champion now..!!

    • maccathered 5 years ago

He was a champion last season.!!!!

    • recoba 5 years ago

Yip! You’ve hit the hammer on the head with a nail there Jon mate. ;)
If he was at LFC Maca would be putting him on at 16/1 for SPOTY I think.

    • maccathered 5 years ago

Wherever he plays makes no difference, players move on.

    • maccathered 5 years ago

You guys are missing the point. It is all a publicity stunt.Jordan said it himself in his post.He won’t be doing these things after the awards which he won’t.It’s people like your good selves that are taken in.

    • recoba 5 years ago

Not taken in with anything I couldnt care less about him and his publicity campaign. Its your talk about him speaking out… unlike Barnes who is now one of race in footballs biggest voices and you can be sure if he was playing today he wouldn’t just let the useless authorities handle it and get on with it.

    • recoba 5 years ago

Your missing the point I’m just talking about him and his racial abuse. If use think that and other stuff is ALL towards getting awards etc I disagree although I’m sure some is for his benefit.

Derby have been dreadful all match. Still not registered 1 shot on target and we’re in injurytime. Losing 2 nil against a side that’s lost 9 from their last 11.
