WE are a long, long way from those halcyon days of late April when the Icelandic leagues spring back into life and signal warmer weather and better football (?) but for those with a mild addiction to the Nordic game, there’s a few scatterings of comfort over the coming weeks.
The pre-season (Fotbolti Cup) may not be full on league status but it is way beyond a friendly and offers a great chance to showcase new squads and gain an early insight into potential form.
STJARNAN v FH (8.10pm)
It you are just looking at straight H2H’s, this one won’t stand out with just 1 in 5 seeing more than 3 goals but I seemed to remember that the previous 2 pre-season games DID yield a few goals…a quick look at stats show that to be the case with the corresponding fixtures finishing with scorelines of 2-2 and and 3-1 in favour of Stjarnan.
The hosts were certainly the better side last year and I wrote much last season (for the last season and a half really) about FH Hafnarfjordur’s total inability to keep a clean sheet.
Time will tell what happens in 2019 but a combination of both sides being always ready to score and concede coupled with a fast and narrow artificial surface primed for rising corner counts, I’m taking on two selections.
