After seeing the start for Under The Twilight, I lost all hope.
Until the final furlong, I thought there was no chance that the horse was going to get up. Harry Davies threaded the needle and gave her a great ride, but it wasn't enough. She was beaten by the 14/1 French Affair, who finished a neck ahead of our selection. Close call, and minor each-way returns was the result.
Call Margot 20/1 (0.5pt EW, 5pl) – Goodwood 4.10
I have to keep the faith with Call Margot after she should have won for us when tipped up at Epsom in the three-year-old version of the dash. She was mightily unlucky, not getting the splits at the right time, so she gets my vote once more.
I didn't notice she was running at Hamilton on her most recent start, and I'm glad because she didn't run to the same level. Fillies are like that and can throw in stinking runs out of nowhere, so I wouldn't read too much into it.
In all fairness, Hamilton is a completely different track to Epsom, but Goodwood shares similarities to Epsom. They are first and second for the fastest five-furlong tracks in the country. She evidently enjoyed her time on the downhill course, so there's no reason to believe that she won't get on well at this course.
Since I believe she should have won at Epsom, it's worth mentioning the odds difference between her and Naana's Shadow. There was 2lbs different in them at Epsom; there is a 19lbs difference this time around. Naana's has franked the form, winning again since and running respectably in a Listed race. She is the favourite at 13/2, yet Call Margot is 20/1.
Get Outta Here 15/2 (0.5pt EW, 5pl) – Goodwood 5.55
Another old selection of mine makes the cut for Day Three of Glorious Goodwood.
I was debating giving another chance to Get Outta Here, but in the end I thought the track would be suited for him. He has gone close over today's course and distance, which is always a huge positive at these niche tracks like Goodwood.
To add to the previous line, I think the downhill course is what he needs. The way he travelled into the race from an impossible position was impressive; his gas tank emptied and he had nothing left to give. In all fairness, the form of that race might work out better than first anticipated. The winner was unlucky on their next run at Ascot over a furlong shorter, as they didn't get the clearest of runs through. The runner-up went on to win his next race back in Ireland.
Menuisier's stable is out of form, but I believe strongly in David's capabilities. This guy has done fantastic jobs with similar horses over the years, and I think it's a safe assessment to make that this horse is on a good handicap mark. Whether today is the day or not, we'll find out, but if they are going for the hold-up ride, they've got the right man in the saddle.
