A CRACKING four-day festival kicks off today at York and there is some top-class action right from the off. I'm gutted I won't be there but I'll just have to settle for the TV coverage.
1.55pm
First day, first race and I think I have a nice winner to get us started. Regular readers will remember I have tipped EL ASTRONAUTE in the past so much so in fact that ‘astronaute' comes up in my predictive text. What this lad needs is a super quick 5 furlongs (ideally he would like 4.5 furlongs if such a race existed in the UK) so the slightly downhill 5 furlong trip here is ideal. Hopefully he will bounce out of the stalls and hit the front early. Sometimes he holds on, sometimes he doesn't but he is in great form so the prices look fair to me.
4.15pm
EUCHEN GLEN is another one I tipped previously – for the Old Newton Cup in July – and although he disappointed that day it was almost certainly too short a trip for him as he proved last time out. I think he has a good bit more improvement in him and he looks like great each-way value to me. He will sit out the back and pick them off one by one. Theydon Grey is probably the biggest threat because he looks like a tenacious sort who doesn't like to be passed – the ideal characteristic for a two miler.
4.50pm
This is an ultra-competitive race for two year olds so we don't have tons of form to go on but GREEN FORTUNE looked like a nice horse last time out and the one he beat that day has won very nicely since. The rest of his form also checks out and looks absolutely rock solid to me. I will be surprised if this isn't a Group horse in due course and his trainer Willie Haggas is always on fire at this festival each year. I can't see this one being out of the frame so with at least 4 places on offer let's take advantage.
