1.50 Sandown

There is some appeal with the favourite Rapid Applause who is definitely improving and is a rare Sandown runner for Mick Easterby but at the prices my preference is definitely for HADDAF with James Doyle in the saddle. He has won nicely over this course and distance twice this season and has now dropped down to a workable handicap mark again after an excusable mid-division run at Goodwood last time.

2.25pm Sandown

RED FORCE ONE is an improving gelding and whilst good to soft ground is a bit of unknown the same can be said for most of the field. He has won his last three and although this is a step up in class he has earned it and looks good value to me at these prices.

2.45pm Beverley

TAKE COVER takes a step down in class today to come here and win this one. He is the top rated horse in the race, he won last season and I think he should be considerably shorter than 3/1 to do it again.

3.00pm Sandown

On paper AWESOMETANK needs to improve another 7lb to beat the favourite Veracious here and is behind a few others on ratings but regular readers will know that I am big fan of Awesometank who has landed the odds for me several times now including last time over course and distance when she was headed but refused to go down and fought back to win nicely. She is exactly the sort of filly you want to back: tenacious, hard-working and classy.

Granted we are dealing with a favourite who was third in a Group 1 behind two cracking fillies but Veracious has only won a maiden so far and it remains to be seen if she will have the guts to go past a determined Awesometank when push comes to shove down the straight here. 8-1 is more than a fair price for me.

• 3.00 Sandown – Awesometank – 2pt win (8-1, Ladbrokes, William Hill, Bet365)
