Friday was a total mess. Two selections that drifted like a proverbial barge, leaving us with no chance whatsoever.
I think I am totally done with backing Christian Williams' horses on the back of that performance and drift on Williethebuilder.
When a horse opens up at 7/4 favourite, but goes off at 8/1 and has the champion jockey on board, the horse was evidently undercooked on stable debut. Christian is renowned for tinkering with the handicap system, so he is now going to be avoided, as I've had my fingers burned too many times.
Dan Skelton must've been having a laugh sticking a horse on its rules debut over fences. I honestly thought, with that intent on placing him over fences on his first run, that he would be a smart horse. It looked like he had never seen a fence in his life.
Indemnity 5/1 (1pt) – Ascot 3.10
It looks like a really tough card for the first jumps meeting of the season at Ascot. Going through the card, Indemnity stood out like a horse I'd like to get involved in.
I saw this horse run eighteen days ago at Market Rasen, and I was very impressed with the performance.
At Market Rasen, I decided to take him on with a bigger priced horse, but it wouldn't have mattered if I went for another market principle, Indemnity looked like a real improver and a horse ahead of the handicapper.
This is a much sterner test, and is effectively the first acid test. He only won by an extended length last time out, but the way he moved through the race suggested he is a good horse. Not only that, but he made a mess at the last hurdle, which made the race closer than it actually was.
Emma Lavelle has been in tremendous form over the last couple of months, and she has started the new jumps season off nicely.
Back it with Tote (no fixed odds)Le Coq Hardi 6/1 (1pt) – Ascot 3.45
Whenever an Irish horse sends one across the waters for a big pot, it's often seen as an easy pick, as they are a shrewd bunch on the other side of the Irish Sea. I agree with what I've just said, but I think you've got to give a solid chance to Le Coq Hardi.
This unexposed chaser from Henry De Bromehead's yard made an encouraging start to life over three miles in the Kerry National a month ago.
He finished fourth in that race, and the form of the horses ahead of him has been boosted.
The runner-up won at Cheltenham last weekend, and the third-placed horse won the Munster National just over a week ago.
Mike O'Connor has made the trip over and takes off 3lbs, making him a lively bet for this big pot handicap.
