Found A Fifty 5/1 – Down Royal 14.40
Gordon Elliott does very well at this meeting, so I think it's worth siding with his main runner for this Grade 1 based on jockeys.
Found A Fifty is a solid horse over shorter, so has to prove he is just as effective over this trip, but seeing Jack Kennedy booked over Stellar Story and Western Fold suggests they fancy his chances highly.
There are some solid horses in this race, particularly Envoi Allen and Spillane's Tower, but on this ground and at this time of year, I think Found A Fifty has his best chance of landing a Grade 1 for the first time since April 2024.
Western Fold seems to be the bottom pick for the Elliott trio. Danny Gilligan, who rides that horse, has opted for Stellar Story, which makes my selection Found A Fifty even more attractive.
Grizedale 13/2 – Newmarket 2.17
I put up Grizedale on his last start at Ascot around a month ago. He handled the soft conditions well that day, but wasn't good enough to beat two other horses, who ran to solid RPRs for the class.
This is a quicker surface at Newmarket, which raises another question, as he has been doing the majority of his runs on the all-weather. His pedigree says he should be fine for it, and I think a repeat performance should see him go very close to winning this.
Top Target 9/1 – Wetherby 1.15
One of the best teams in the country for making a hurdler a better chaser is Kim Bailey & Mat Nicholls.
Kim Bailey, when being the sole trainer on the licence, was renowned for making much better chasers out of his low-rated hurdlers. There is no reason why this PTP winner cannot join that list.
He showed a good level of talent as a hurdler, winning a race and finishing second on another occasion. His handicap mark went as high as 123, but then his progression started to slow down.
They are now trying him over fences. With the racecourse experience he has gained, and the win at Wetherby being key, he could make a winning chase debut.
His odds are currently suggesting he has a small chance of winning, but I think he has a much greater chance.
Wa Wa 11/2 – Wetherby 4.05
Wa Wa has been competing in hurdle races since moving to Olly Murphy's stable, but he has won a couple of chase races in Ireland for his previous trainer.
Apart from last time out, where he was comfortably beaten, he has been consistent for Olly Murphy. I think you've got to give him the benefit of the doubt last time out, as it was his return to racing, and chances are that he needed the run.
With the recent run under his belt, and a decision to revert back to fences, I think he has a solid chance with the in form duo of Murphy and Bowen doing the steering.
