I wasn't too impressed with the rides from both of my selections on Tuesday.
The ride on Wind Tor is the one which got on my nerves. What was the 7lb claimer doing? She has the mare held up in last place for the entire race, and never thought of pressing any buttons until halfway through the final circuit, by this point the horse was 20L behind the leaders. Absolutely baffling, not one for jockey bashing but that ride was horrendous. The horse responded well to the jockey's urgings and if she was positioned closer to the leaders, it might've been a different story.
Nottingham 3:50 – Tuddenham Green 3/1 (1pt)
With it being the start of the flat season it can be quite dodgy to get involved in some of the racing as horses will more than likely not be fully wound up, but that won't be the case for Tuddenham Green who has recently won a race over hurdles and should be primed for a good season on the flat off a low handicap mark of 70.
This gelding of Nathaniel should be ready to progress on the flat now he's running over 2m, a trip which looks sure to suit based on his previous runs on the flat from last season. He has raced over a couple of furlongs shorter than today and has looked like he needs a true test of stamina, which he should get today at Nottingham, racing over 2m on soft ground. The ground looks fine for him, he won over hurdles on this ground last time out 14 days ago and has run well on the soft on the flat over 11f when finishing 3rd to Soulcombe. The form of his flat runs looks decent now and puts him as the one to beat today. Soulcombe progressed nicely last season, winning the race TG was in when he was rated just 68, he finished as 97 rated when leaving William Haggas, and he went on to produce an RPR of 114 on his first start in Australia. The runner-up at Haydock managed to win a couple of runs after, recording an RPR of 85.
His run from Sandown looks decent as well, with the runner-up improving a few pounds since and the same can be applied to the winner and the fourth-placed horse.
Rossa Ryan takes the ride and is the main go-to jockey for Alan for this season with 5 wins from 25 rides.
Kempton 7:15 – Monopolise 4/1 (1pt)
I'll give a chance to Monopolise who looks good value against the short-priced favourite. The favourite will make the running, and in a small-runner affair that should suit him, but I think there's plenty of improvement to come from the Ed Walker horse.
He started to get the ball rolling last year when he entered handicaps, winning his last two runs. His pedigree suggests the older he gets the better he will become, as his mother was better as she got older, reaching her prime when being a 4yo, whereas she was fairly average when a juvenile.
The form of his most recent win was franked the other day by the third-placed horse who won in good style when upped in trip on soft ground, recording an RPR of 86 (8lbs higher than his rating).
He is dropped back to 7f for today's run, and I don't think that will be an issue. He won over 1m last time out but his worst part of the race was probably in the final furlong as he didn't quite push on as you'd expect when a horse hits the front, so I think it might be deemed a positive that they go back to 7f.
