Apologies for the tip yesterday, I expected a lot more than what we got from Might I. Surely that wasn't a true showing, as he was beaten by a horse rated in the 120s, who used to be trained by Dan Skelton, and when you consider the form Might I had previously shown this season I'd have to say it wasn't his true form. With that being said, I thought the winner won nicely, and I did say that was the one I was concerned about.
Chepstow 2:05 – Vidi Vici 3/1 (1pt PaddyPower)
I don't think this 2yo field is particularly great and a newcomer with the pedigree that Vidi Vici has should be more than capable of winning on debut.
He is a gelding of Invincible Army and is out of a Galileo mare, so in time he might be better over further, but that isn't seen to be a negative for me. In the early months of 2yo races, I think having that bit of extra stamina in the pedigree can be a significant advantage as they will be able to see their races out stronger than those who don't. I think with inexperienced horses who can be keen, a spriting pedigree 2yo can blow their petrol tank quite quickly. In contrast, a horse with a Galileo in their pedigree with a bit more stamina-based can last longer and outstay their rivals. I'm not saying this horse won't be quick as he is by Invincible Army who has already had some winners as a new sire and I think this horse from the Eve Johnson Houghton yard should be able to mix it with those who have the experience edge.
Eve has hit the ground running with her 2yo's and she gave me a winner a couple of weeks ago with a similar type in Bobsleigh, who races in the same colours as today, was gelded before his first run and had a pedigree suggesting he will be better over further in time.
Eve is 5/17 with 2yo's at Chepstow in the last five years, which is a decent strike rate and going back to pedigrees, the winner of this race last year has since turned into a very good miler, rating in the 100s, so it goes to show it's not all about sprint pedigrees at this time of year for lesser races.
Chepstow 4:25 – Time's Eye 3/1 (2pt PaddyPower)
I would be very disappointed if Time's Eye doesn't win this race, as I think she has the best form in the race by a landslide and I think she is well-treated off a mark of 79.
The jockey booking of Dougie Costello might confuse some as he is riding for Ralph Beckett, and he has been using the likes of Rossa Ryan and Rob Hornby a lot, but the latter is as Sandown today so he's opted for Dougie who has given Ralph a few winners over the last 5 years or so, and does tend to get some spare rides, like today and I think he's got a nice one.
They reported that this filly didn't handle the dip at Newmarket on seasonal reappearance, I think that is total nonsense and the fact they've come out with that is quite strange. She had previously finished 2nd on the same track and distance, so clearly she does handle the undulations that Newmarket has to offer. Personally, I think she needed the run as she came there with a great-looking run but faded quite quickly. Chepstow has a fair few undulations, so with that experience at Newmarket, I think she'll enjoy the track.
The form of the race at Newmarket last year has worked out nicely and I think she is definitely better than her current handicap mark.
