Cheltenham wasn't so kind to me this month with some fallers/unlucky losers, and some running well below par. Monday's racing looks terrible to say the least, so just the one selection from me.
Plumpton 3:15
Though carrying top weight is never something you want to have when backing a horse, this race is probably one of them where it won't have that impact as it normally would as four of the five horses in the race carry 11st 7lbs or more, with three carrying 11st 12lbs +. MERCIAN KNIGHT is my selection for this race and I think the return of headgear is something which will spring him back to life.
This horse definitely has potential and has ability of a horse better than his current mark 107, but he tends to race lazily, which is the reason for his poor comeback run at Bangor just over two weeks ago. That day he had no headgear, but today the Blinkers return, and they reach for the tongue tie for the first time which goes to show how not straight forward he is, but he gets the aids which should hopefully liven him up. Another thing to note is the jockey booking. Stable jockey Jack Quinlan takes the ride of Amy Murphy's other runner at Leicester, so Amy has opted for Jamie Moore which is a very positive booking and one which should suit this horse. Jamie is a strong jockey, and as we've seen on plenty of occasions, he keeps going at his mount and gives them a never die attitude ride, which is something which this lazy horse needs.
The form of the selection is a worry, as he has more letters in his recent form than numbers, but this drop in class should make this an easier task. He has never raced in a Class 5 before, so this is a career low race in which he's ever raced in, hence why he is carrying a top weight of 12st 1lbs. I refuse to believe he doesn't like fences, as when he was a hurdler, he always had the look of a chaser as he is very scopey. This race isn't great by any means, and that is the thing of most of the races for Monday, so a return to form is definitely not out of the question.
