I didn't expect Mutaany to get beat at Nottingham, especially by the 18/1 outsider who had shown little in terms of form in Ireland. The manner in which that horse won today is crazy and nothing will be done about it with the stewards, so fair play to connections 🤣
Ascot 2:40 – Queen For You 6/1 (1pt)
To win this on debut you'd have to be a decent horse, as there are some nice-looking types in this race with some fairly solid form, so you'd have to be running to a level of 95+ to win. That might sound tough for a horse on its first run, but I do think Queen For You could be up to it.
Backing horses on debut is always a risk, but it does pay off and often you can get decent value, as many punters will stray away from it. Gregory was a winning tip of debut on Saturday just gone, as he represented the same yard and owner as Queen For You. Similar to Gregory, this horse has a very eye-catching pedigree and John & Thady Gosden could've easily found this horse an easier target, instead, they've gone for a 20k race, which gives the impression this filly could be very good. The Gosden's aren't one for chucking their horses in the deep end too soon, they like to map out a path and go from there, this isn't a Class 1 race, but it might have Class 1 horses in it for the future.
This yard won this race last year with a smart newcomer, Grand Dame, so they aren't afraid of doing it. Due to having no races this horse races off bottom weight of 8st 11lbs, which will be a huge help considering she hasn't got any racecourse experience. She is by Kingman and is out of a mare called Fallen For You. The dam was a good horse, rated in the 100s and has produced the likes of Glorious Journey and Love Is You. The latter is a full sister and only had four races in her career, which saw her win on debut and finish in the places at Class 1 level. Glorious Journey was mainly a 7f horse but did win over a mile earlier in his career, so this trip for Queen For You should be fine and I think she'll handle any ground.
Ascot 3:15 – El Habeeb 10/1 (1pt)
Taking on Trueshan and Coltrane might seem a tough ask, but I do think Trueshan is starting to come to the end of his career as a top racehorse. His run last time around was a shadow of his former self from last year and the years before and I think he is worth having a bet against, especially on ground which won't be bottomless, which is how he likes it.
I like El Habeeb, trained by Kevin Philippart De Foy. This horse was basically a horse who had a rating built to exploit a low handicap mark until they tried him in the St Leger at the back end of last year, which saw him finish 6th, being held up from way off the pace and staying on strongly, doing his best bit of work in the final half a furlong. He then came to Ascot and landed a Class 1 Listed prize, and was then put away till the spring where he appeared at Meydan and finished 5th over 2m. I thought that was a decent effort as it was a tough race on paper and it was his first run in over 170 days, so he was entitled to have needed that run.
I think this race is definitely winnable and it looks open for a lightly raced horse to come in and improve past some of the horses who are rated higher. Coltrane improved last year, and he beat Trueshan and then finished 2nd behind him on Champions Day, but I'm still not convinced. He hasn't had a run this season, and this won't be the end goal for him if they think he can run well in the bigger races down the line, so I can't imagine he'll be tuned up to 100% (has a Group 2 entry in a few weeks time).
Brighton 5:35 – Bobsleigh 9/4 (1pt)
In a 2yo race which doesn't have any amazing pieces of form to date, I think a newcomer can come in and win this.
Bobsleigh represents an in-form yard for their 2yos, coming out of the Eve Johnson Houghton stable. Eve has had a few decent juveniles in recent years and she has hit the ground running with 2/2 this year, there has been some early money for this horse, which is probably people thinking the same way I am rather than actual money which is meaningful, as the money normally comes late for Eve's horses.
He has a pedigree which is suitable for further, but I don't think that's a negative for a 2yo at this point of the season, especially at a track like Brighton where it's a stiff uphill finish.
2:05 ascot – the line 9/2
Go your own way 5.35 Brighton, doubt it will win but 40s ew extra for top 4 looks generous. Drops in class and better ground might get into the top 4
