Frustrating result for Sunday, with the selection beating the odds-on favourite, but bumping into a Mare who had previously never won over fences. The 7lb difference in the weights was the deciding factor, and you'd have to say we were unlucky.
Stratford 1:45
SON OF CAMAS appeared to have the jumps game at his feet when he was a smart bumper winner a few years back, winning a Newbury bumper previously won by some decent horses. However, it hasn't quite gone to plan since the early days of his jumps career, and we now see him in a Stratford Handicap Chase off a mark of 112, when a couple of years ago, you'd have thought he'd be running the day after in some race at the Cheltenham festival. This is a very low handicap mark for a horse who used to show tonnes of ability, and it's hard to believe he's lost his talent over a year or so. This race is the easiest assignment he has been given, and off this kind of handicap mark, it wouldn't surprise me to see him bounce back. Nico De Boinville goes to Stratford for the one ride, as does Nicky with this being his only jumps runner of the day. Nicky hasn't been in great form recently, as it has been heavily told on social media, but it wouldn't worry me, as like Matt Chapman noted, the horses he has sent out in the last few weeks haven't been odds on shots, so there's no need to get worried.
This race looks okay for the grade, with Raffles Gitane being the one who will be on a lot of punters bet slips. He was a recent NR in a race I put up on Friday, which resulted in the race becoming a two runner race. They clearly felt this track/ground for today is what he prefers, so he needs to be respected. However, he will have to improve a decent amount of beat this field, and at the odds, I think he can be taken on. Like I mentioned previously, this is a step back in grade for Son Of Camas, who has previously been competing in Class 2/3 races, with a recent 2nd to Goa Lil looking like a decent piece of form in comparison to this field. I think this speed track could suit, and the drying conditions should be fine.

It's also worth noting that he is was heavily punted on his bumper debut at Punchestown in their end of year meeting, in one of their big prize bumpers. He went off at 2/1 and had Patrick Mullins doing the steering, so a big run was expected and he clearly had a good reputation. He was reported to be clinically abnormal post race, but it goes to show what his yard thought of his ability, and when you consider this race to what he has raced against in the past, it would be a shame if he couldn't be competitive.
Stratford 2:55
This is a cracking little race, and that's not something I'd normally say about a 0-120 Handicap Chase on a Monday, but here we are. CORRAN CROSS looks to have a solid chance in this, based on the form of his most recent run from Wincanton, 78 days ago. He was travelling well into that race that day before falling on landing, after jumping the fence well. It's hard to say how the race would've ended up, but to say he would've caused problems to the winner is surely an accurate statement. Since that day, Richard Bandey has given him some time off the track to recoup, and a lot of that is down to the fact that he “didn't want the winter ground”, so the fact that Stratford is drying up as we speak (unless we get some unexpected rain), that should be in the favour of this lad.
The form of that race at Wincanton has started to work out very well:
- Native Robin (Winner), has since won two more times and has gone up 18lbs in the handicap.
- Foxboro (Runner-up), has been placed 3x since, including being runner-up twice, and then eventually won a race two days.
- The Unit (3rd), was a winning tip for us on the thread a couple of weeks ago
Taunton 3:10
Another good quality race to start the week comes in the staying Handicap Chase at Taunton, with an okay prize of £7,951 to the winner. This race is mostly contested by the old-timers, who have raced recently, and even though they have been great servants to their owners and trainers, it would be a shame that a progressive younger horse couldn't put them in their place.
SOME DETAIL surely has a massive chance in this race off a feather weight of 10st 1lbs, which is effectively 9st 10lbs with Tom Buckley taking off a very handy 5lbs. This horse hasn't been tried over this trip before, but based on his run last time out, it's definitely worth a try, and should suit if my eyes judged it correctly. He was staying on powerfully over 2m 7f on this course, robbing the runner-up on the line, who has no idea he was coming at the pace he was. This lad is an 8yo and is totally unexposed over fences, with this being his seventh run over the larger obstacles, so even though you'll have to take his stamina on trust, the odds available make it worth it.
Revels Hill is another unexposed horse who has to prove he stays this far, but the difference with the selection and this horse is the big difference in weight carried, and the odds available. The odds are more than less half the price of Some Detail, and that's got to be down to the fact he is trained by Harry Fry, who is seen to be more of a ‘sexy' trainer than Nigel Hawke.

Plumpton 2:10
Even though KANSAS CITY CHIEF isn't great odds, of around 7/4, I still believe that is good value. This horse has been running cracking races at Cheltenham all season, and despite the fact he is 13yo, he clearly still loves the game and is tough as old boots. This horse generally only has one way of running, and that is from the front. He has to carry top weight, but 7lbs is taken off by the rider, who gets on extremely well with the horse and are a great partnership together. This isn't as competitive of a race as what he has competed this year, and he can run them into the ground from the front.

Did anyone catch Gordon Elliott’s seven best bets for Cheltenham on At the races? I amabaged to catch River D’etel, Run Wild Fred, Tiger Roll, Ginto, did anyone catch the other three??
Sire Du Berlais was another.
Didn’t hear it Jim but would have thought American Mike would be one and possibly Frontal Assault?
At a preview evening Elliott was given £50 as a free charity bet by paddy power and he added £70 of his own money for a £1 super Heinz (120 bets)
The 7 horses in the super Heinz are
