Racing tips: Joe Fanning will be going, going, Gone at Musselburgh

Having a stinker at the moment and not getting the rub of the green as Lady Dreamer broke the slowest, travelled like a dream but was behind a wall of horses and only managed to finish in the places. In These Shoes ran an absolute stinker of a race, she handled good to soft but might have found heavy conditions too much for her, but connections must've felt she handles them as surely they would've pulled her out, so it'll be interesting to see if anything was amiss. 

Musselburgh 3:40 – Gone 4/1 (1pt)

Tuesday's racing is terrible, to put it bluntly, and with the weather being as extreme as it has been and the forecasts being all of the place plus my terrible form of late I think sticking with one selection is the way forward. Gone looks to be the play in this muddling race with the majority of the horses coming into today's race in decent form.

On paper, my selection looks to have hit her ceiling, but I don't think that's quite the case. She was a winning machine earlier this season, winning three on the bounce and was strongly fancied to complete the four-timer and then bounce back with a win after she didn't manage four in a row, which saw her finish 4th last time out, so hasn't managed to win on her last two starts. I think the quick returns to the track did catch up to her and not so much the handicapper. If you watch both of her last two starts to go through each race like the winner and on both occasions hit the front and at the time you'd have thought she would've powered on and won but I think the amount of racing did catch up to her as you can see in the last start. She tracked a strong pace, picked off the leader last time out, and showed a good turn of foot to go a few lengths clear but then the gas tank emptied very quickly, and that looked to me like a very fatigued horse who needed a break.

The Johnston team decided to give her a break and she returns from 28-day rest today and I think that would've done her the world of good and she can continue to progress again. The drop back to 7f isn't a concern for me, she has a good cruising speed and clearly possesses a good turn of foot for this level. The forecast is saying a bit of rain will land just before this race and it'll be raining during the race, so the ground will probably change from good, good to firm in places to a little worse. The draining is very good at Musselburgh so I don't expect a drastic change and that should be fine for this filly.

There doesn't appear to be a lot of pace in this race and with Joe Fanning on board I'd imagine he'd like to grab the rail on this pace-biased track. If he gets an uncontested least then that will be great as Joe is one of the best in the weighing room of judging the pace on the front end.
