Racing tips: James Doyle catches the eye on the Robyn Brisland trained Cool Vixen

Haroya was another horse to finish 2nd for me. Mounting up to 3 runner-ups in the last two days, which is always annoying to have. She did struggle to carry the weight she had, but I think she was beaten by the better horse on the day, and you can't fully blame the weight.

Lingfield 2:00

When looking at the odds, I was a little surprised to see my fancy in the race, SCAMPI, priced up as favourite. For a maiden of 11 runs to be installed as favourite when you've got an Archie Watson unexposed type, is quite surprising. I wouldn't be surprised if Scampi did drift in the market, and Alazwar was backed in.

The reason why I'm siding with the longstanding maiden over the others in this race is because his form has a good level to it, with horses franking the form. His most recent run has seen the winner improve from being 83 rated to 92, winning once since and running some nice races after. He was even considered good enough to run the Winter Derby at Lingfield in the Group 3, where he wasn't totally disgraced back in 5th, which produced an RPR of 102. The runner-up, Sky Power, has since won twice, both in Class 3's, which is a good standard of form. His form from other races also reads well, with the Newcastle run in particular producing some good runners from that race.

There is probably going to be a strong pace in this race, so the fact that Scampi does stay slightly further than this trip, is going to be a benefit. Alazwar made all on flat debut last time, and has ran from the front on his bumper runs. He might be taken on for the lead by either Bakersboy or Vignoni who have either lead, or are free going sorts who might be forced to lead. Alazwar looked like a decent horse when winning on bumper debut, but when he was faced with a carrying a penalty, he wasn't able to repeat the fete, and I think that could be the case for his flat career as well, as he will have to be quite decent to shoulder a 7lb penalty over some pretty good yardsticks in Bakersboy & Scampi.

I think it could be worth siding with COOL VIXEN who made an encouraging re-appearance on stable debut for Robyn Brisland after a 484 day break. He finished 5/7, but was only 1.25L behind the winner, so was far from being disgraced, and when you consider the time off the track he had then he must have a fair amount of improvement to come, especially in fitness.

When she was previously trained by Jessica Harrington in Ireland she was a fairly handy type, especially in her early days where she was rated as high as 91 after two runs as a 2yo. Her form has dropped off since then, so she probably hasn't proved herself to be as good as she was when she was 2yo, which is the case for a lot of juveniles. But a mark of 60 is surely too low for a horse who once had a good level of ability.
