Dragon Rock really stunk the place out with his performance at Catterick. Weak in the market, jumped like a snooker table and apparently was reluctant to going to the start. Even after the heavily back odds-on favourite decided to run off course, he still couldn't land a blow. However, the NAP of the day, jumped like a stag and gave Harry Cobden his 100th winner at Wincanton. Best in the business at the moment is Harry and every horse he gets on he rides with top confidence.
Newbury 3:10 – Martator 8/1 (0.5pt EW, WilliamHill)
The Venetia Williams stable keeps pumping out the winners and I've tipped up Martator twice and on both occasions I've felt like this is a horse which will be winning a race or two soon, so I'm not prepared to jump ship just yet.
His jumping was poor on his seasonal debut at Aintree, but they are tough fences, but he ran well enough for me to back him again at Plumpton last time out where he jumped much better but I didn't think he stayed the trip of 2m 3f, so I think the right decision has been made by dropping him to the extended 2m. The handicapper has dropped him 2lbs for his last run, which is kind, as I didn't think he did much wrong apart from being outstayed by horses who probably want further. This is an easier assignment than last time out, as it was a 0-135 and the race had two 129 rated, 134 rated and a 128 rated, with the first two running better than their marks according to RPRs. This is a 0-125 and I don't think they are anywhere near as good as the horses from the Plumpton race.
Newbury is soft, which should be ideal and I think if Charlie gets him into a lovely rhythm, which he manages to do normally, then I think it could be a usual scenario of a Venetia Williams horse swinging on the bridle jumping the last.
Ludlow 12:05 – The Famous Five 11/4 (1pt, Bet365)
At this point, you can probably call me a fanboy of Venetia Williams as for the second and final selection of the day I've gone for The Famous Five in this female amateur jockeys race.
It's hard not to look past The Famous Five for this race given Venetia has teamed up with Lucy Turner to win three of the possible five renewals of this race. They had a second last year and a fourth in the other renewal they didn't manage to win, so evidently is a race they like to target. Last year, Haas Boy would've won by 7-10L, but that horse fell at the final obstacle, so it's interesting they've come back for this race with Gina Andrews on board, who is definitely the best jockey in the race. However, The Famous Five is making his handicap debut in this race, and I thought he was gingerly handled by Charlie Deutsch last time out, almost insinuating this horse will find his better form in handicaps and a mark of 106 is definitely workable.
Torneo 12-15 Newbury 2-1.
Ran well on debut and as a french bred flat horse should relish the soft conditions.
Henderson runs one of my favourite horses from the flat,
The rapist, formerly trained by Andrew balding.
He ran poorly on heavy ground on the flat though and on jumps debut he won’t be flogged here.
