Racing tips: Future champion jockey William Buick has a good book of rides at Windsor

The main action from Sunday unfolds at The Curragh with a couple of Group races and some competitive handicaps. I've opted out of that and played a couple of runners at Windsor.

Novice races can be tricky to figure out, but based on the horses who have run, it looks like a weak race and LEAF MOTIF can make a winning debut.

The future champion jockey, William Buick, takes the ride which is a confident booking for a horse who is making its debut. William rode a winner for the Charlton's yesterday, winning on a fairly short-priced favourite.

Leaf Motif has a nice enough pedigree and is bred for this kind of trip. She is a full-sister to Partitia who was a decent horse for Sir Michael Stoute in 2016 & 2017, getting to as high as 89 in the handicap, winning two races throughout her nine-raced career. She is also a half-sister to Angel Palm who managed to get to a rating of 99 for Ger Lyons, and she's not been seen since so has probably gone off to become a broodmare.

This filly doesn't need to be anything out of the ordinary to win this, and the only concern is the level of maturity she is at and how green she'll be for her first run. The Varian horse has had a few attempts to win a race but hasn't managed to do so, she'll find this much easier than what she's been up against but she is susceptible to a better horse, as she doesn't look a world-beater.

An opening price of 2/1 looks more than fair.

Sir Michael Stoute's 3yo filly of Ulysses might be let in light off a handicap debut mark of 75. KIRILENKO has run well in her three previous novice or maiden races and will now find it easier entering handicapping company.

She has bumped into a couple of nice fillies along the way including Zanbaq, who finished 1.25L ahead of Kirilenko. That horse is now rated 105 after finishing a close second in a Royal Ascot handicap. The horse who finished runner-up behind Zanbaq has gone on to win twice since and ran respectably in the same handicap at Ascot. The form of Kirilenko's most recent race is starting to work out nicely with the winner winning the time after and then finishing a close runner-up in a Group 2 at Royal Ascot. Sea Silk Road, who won that novice race, won by 5.5L which might mean the winner was above average and the rest were fairly poor, but that's not the case as there have been form boosters in behind. The runner-up won next time out, beating a horse who has since gone on and won since. Ashky was a winner yesterday at Newmarket, she was back in fifth. The seventh-place horse has finished runner-up in her next two races as well.

I don't think the other horses in this race have the same level of form, despite being more ‘hardy' from handicaps, which is often a positive. Buick is a positive jockey booking and this lightly raced filly can finally get off the mark at the fourth time of asking.
