Sunday was another poor day of selections which saw Punitive win the marathon race at Fairyhouse when I tipped him up last week. That was a huge kick in the teeth, especially when I'm fairly loyal to horses and give them a couple of chances. That's racing for you and it will happen many times in the future.

Musselburgh 2:10

This appears to be quite a tricky race with an odds-on shot being at the head of the market and horses who will be competitive if returning to form. The one I like has a strange profile but looks like a horse that has more to give off its handicap mark and could be somewhat aimed for this race.

SMART LASS gets in this off bottom weight and was given a very weird ride last time under a 7lb claimer. The rider was very calm on the horse last time, where he travelled nicely and it looked like they weren't fully trying on him as the rider never got animated when the horses ahead were getting clear. The stewards pulled in the trainer and the jockey that day and they questioned it. Both jockey and trainer said that the rider was under orders to try and get the horse to settle and position him towards the back and then to ride out under hands and heels. For me, it looks like a blatant try of getting him ready for a race. Iain Jardine went for an apprentice who had no wins under her belt, so chances are they would be less likely to hand a ban, and when you look at how he was running on in the final furlong or so, it looked like the horse had more to give and was under restraint.

If you look at how he won his only race over hurdles, which came at today's course and distance, he cruised through the race like he did last time, but was positioned more prominently and won with a fair amount in hand. This is a tougher race than what he beat when he won his race but I have reservations about the form of the others and doubts over the ground/trip.

Musselburgh 3:10

I'm going for another course and distance winner in the final race of the day at Musselburgh.

CHANCEANOTHERFIVE actually won this race three years ago but has since shown patchy form. I'm not going to say he's been fully aimed at this race for a while as I don't believe that would be true, but he has dropped down to a good handicap mark of 100 over fences. Considering he is a 10yo he is still somewhat lightly raced over fences with just five runs under his belt. His only win as a chaser came off a mark of 102, where he won by 11L running to an RPR of 119. He was hit quite hard by the handicapper because of that run and that didn't help him in many races down the line.

He has been running over hurdles for the most part since 2019, including this season where he has run four times all over hurdles. I thought his recent run at this track was a good run and a good indicator he is returning to form off a dangerous mark. He finished 5th/13 running off a huge weight of 12st, whereas today he finds himself running off bottom weight.

There is always a chance that he will bump into a horse who is well-handicapped but at the odds, I think he is worth a small bet, as I do think it's strange they are returning to fences for the particular race, especially as he does seem to run well at this track.

    Both SKYBET….

Fairly useful class 2/3 performer for Paul nicholls up to 2021 (ran at the Cheltenham festival in 2021) and has since moved to David cottin via nick littmoden and Sophie leach.
His first 2 runs for cottin have been a big improvement on his recent efforts.
This is a chase though, but cottin specialises in chasers, cross country mainly so maybe this has been the plan.

Going back through his form, on his 2 year old debut in a 7 furlong race in 2016 at chantilly, 3 familiar names appear in that race.
Saldier, who has been with Mullins in Ireland for a while and ran yesterday at fairyhouse.
Saglawy also was with mullins and wasn’t far off being a top class hurdler and retired in 2019.
    And
Waldgeist who went on to win the arc de triomphe.
This is pointless information but interesting 😜

no time but loughnane/loughnane(7) have 3 long shots, haku’s penalty negated, under fox 2nd run for stable, 2 below his most recent turf win and janaat dropped another 2lbs, couldnt advise any seriously but worth a check, do expect this combo to pop up now and then at nice prices. BOL.

aw ledge antony brittain got four out. had a few go in recently with bis form reading 121123, mark winn has done a bit of winning for him and is on three. his other has stable apprentice in the 420 on a long losing run but now well hcapped. yahooby 2 lower than win two starts back then 2nd lto to a stablemate so could go close but too skinny. his others perhaps worth a watch only.
