HEAVY rain is playing tricks with the form book and I'll be taking things fairly easy this week in the run-up to Royal Ascot. ORIN SWIFT (3.40) has been very consistent recently and was only worn down close home by well-handicapped Agrapart at Ascot (soft) last month. He should handle muddy conditions at Goodwood.
Robert Winston travels to the track for one ride on GIVE HIM TIME (2.30). Nick Gifford's gelding was fifth in this event last year, beaten around three lengths, and his Newbury fourth three weeks ago gives him an each-way chance in the 1m 3f handicap.
David O'Meara continues to churn out winners and LINCOLN PARK (2.00) fairly whizzed around the Chester turns on soft last month. A 4lb rise isn't severe.
The late Sam Morshead was responsible for fostering the feel-good factor at Perth and it is fitting their Gold Cup this afternoon is named in his honour. As a fearless National Hunt jockey Sam shared a flat with Kim Bailey in his younger days and it will be a joyous occasion if Bailey’s southern raider CRESSWELL LEGEND (4.25) scoops the big race.
Cresswell Legend ran Cubomania to a head here last September in a Novices’ Chase, the pair pulling 20 lengths clear of the third, with Cubomania going on to better things. Bailey’s eight-year-old also chased up useful Calett Mad (soft) in a 3m 2f handicap hurdle, so stamina shouldn’t be a problem. More recently, Cresswell Legend beat the 132-rated Fox Appeal in a three-runner affair at Ludlow and is just preferred to the Jim Goldie-trained top weight Get Out The Gate, an easy course winner last time along with Red Giant, and chasing recruit Dragon D’Estruval.
