Racing tips: Abate should be an odds-on shot for the back-to-back wins

Moon De Vega was a winner on Thursday, being one win from one selection. I thought the ride was what won the race, she got to the front at the right time and with an extra half furlong or so she might not have held on, so props to the jockey.

Haydock 7:55 – Abate 6/4 (2pt PaddyPower)

I'm not a big fan of following up with horses after a short break from their previous runs, especially if they are carrying a penalty, but Abate isn't carrying a penalty and based on that he is surely a shoo-in for a follow-up victory and the fact he's not odds-on makes him a strong bet in my eyes.

Going for back-to-back wins after a week or so is always dangerous as fitness might play a part in the dying furlongs where they are still fatigued from their previous race, but I'll take a chance that he is fine as he is too well-handicapped to ignore and he should be half the price he is to follow up for his recent win at Hamilton. His win in Scotland was over 5f, which didn't concern me even though his wins have come over 6f as that track is a stiff track where stamina comes into play. He returns to 6f on a flat track today, which is what he has done most of his winning on in his career so the return to the extra furlong isn't a concern.

Adrian Nicholls remains in great form and his daughter, Mia Nicholls retains the ride, taking off 7lbs and based on what I saw from her just over a week ago she seems to be a decent jockey. Hopefully, she keeps it simple again and front runs with Abate, so there are no excuses if he does lose, as she should be able to avoid all possible trouble.
