RACE one on day three is the JLT Novices Chase. It is 2m 3f 198 yards, has only had 6 runnings and was introduced to give novice chasers an extra option as a distance in between the Arkle and RSA.
JLT Novices Chase
- Winners aged 6 or 7 have won 6/6
- Winners ran between 32 and 53 days before this race 6/6
- Winner raced between 3 and 5 times over fences 6/6
- Winner trained in Ireland 5/6
- Winner has previously won at least two times over fences 5/6
- Winner had won last time out 5/6
Yorkhill – Willie Mullins 13-8 10bet
Currently favourite for the JLT and one of my antepost selections but with all that is going on in the Mullins yard, will he still run in this? Well at least we are NRNB so that takes the pressure off – not that there should be any pressure. Yorkhill is two from two over fences and looking impressive to me if not with others.
Top Notch – Nicky Henderson 4-1 10bet
Not convinced with this horse and the odds are very short, even after winning his last four races which have been impressive but he just doesn’t have it for me and especially not at 4-1.
Disko – Noel Meade 7-1 10bet
This horse is interesting as the more I look at him the more I think he's natural for this race. Two from four over fences he hasn’t set the world alight but there is something. I have said on two separate occasions on my Cheltenham preview that this race would be my view of where connections will send him and I still think that, I am warming to this horse in a big way.
Politologue – Paul Nicholls 6-1 10bet
Looked good on his four Chase starts to date with three wins and a second, his Ascot grade two win looks his most impressive by beating a couple of decent horses in Rock The Kasbah and Royal Vacation. He looks a decent jumper and Paul Nicholls has already said that, outside chance.
Whisper – Nicky Henderson 10-1 10bet
The problem this horse has when it comes to festivals is that the going goes against him as he would ideally like a softer surface. But he has looked decent over fences and would deserve to take his place in a race that could cut up with horses going elsewhere. His last run over fences was particularly good reading as he beat a useful yardstick in Clan Des Obeaux by half a length and also giving away 5lb but on the likely faster ground I can’t back him.
