Cairnzy kindly offered to take charge of Thursday's racing, and it was nice to see him walk away with a pair of winners.

Run For Mahler wasn't a huge price at Thurles, but he managed to win by a very small margin for the Byrnes stable.

He was backed into 8/11F and managed to have enough in the tank to fend off the strongly-fancied Elliott runner by a neck.

Morte Point was given a confident ride. At points, it looked like he wasn't going to get a run, but when he bolted home when in the clear.

Coedana 2/1 (2pt) – Haydock 1.55

Backing horses on the basis that they need to return to form hasn't been a winning formula for me this flat season, so despite wanting to give Imperial Sovereign a go, I'll swerve it.

I've eventually landed on giving Coedana a chance, even though she is 2/4 on the AW and winless on the turf.

It's not fair to give up on her on turf as she has only raced once on this surface. The form of her third of six in a maiden at Thirsk looks good. The winner and second are now 85 and 86 rated, so it was a decent effort that day.

The runs prior to the Thirsk run also look good. The form behind Chilli Queen has been franked, as has the runner-up finish to Understudy.

She was given a break in the middle of the summer, but returned to action with two wins on the AW. She improved massively from her first run from a layoff to the second, which produced a performance worthy of an RPR of 94.

The trip is an unknown, but given how well she stayed on at Southwell and Newcastle, it's definitely worth exploring.

Brave Knight 8/1 (0.5pt EW) – Uttoxeter 3.32

This is a good contest, but a competitive renewal, as there's no real standout performer.

I think you've got to give a good chance to the top weight, as he is still a young horse in terms of jumps horses, and is in good form. However, I wanted to give a chance to Brave Knight, despite Nicholls being in terrible form.

From the looks of it, Paul Nicholls' horses have been in desperate need of their first run of the season. In the last fortnight, every horse that was making their returning run has been in terrible form.

Brave Knight made an encouraging return to action with a third-placed effort in a Class 3 handicap at Plumpton. Given how bad his stablemates have been running on their return, surely that is a positive sign and that there is more to come.

The step up in trip is an unknown, and doesn't look like it'll suit too much on pedigree. Nicholls is one of the best around, so you have to trust his instinct that this is the right move.
