4.15 Mrs Paddy Power Mares Chase

This is the first running of this race at the Cheltenham Festival, adding yet another Mares' race to the meeting.

I hear rumblings from people that there are too many mares' races at the festival.  I agree to some extent but it's the mares novice hurdle that I would get rid of and I think this race could be a great addition moving forward.

This is of course the first running of the race and it's good for horses like Shattered Love in my view.  She was a class act as a novice, coming here and winning the JLT but has been inconsistent since then.  I had earmarked her as a bet this week but I'm kicking myself that I didn't take the 15-2 that was available a few days ago.

Generally she is now 9-2 and that's too skinny for me in a race where Elimay really looks the part and is much more consistent than Shattered Love has been.  She also has the potential for improvement as a 7 year old that Shattered Love perhaps doesn't have and good ground (as it now looks) is fine for her. Colreevy also has to be taken seriously.

When all is said and done I think I'll sit this one out although if Shattered Love drifts to a backable price (say 7-1) I will have an each way interest.  Equally if Elimay drifts to 7-4 or 13-8 I think she starts to appeal as a win prospect.

Typically, the Irish have a stranglehold on this new 2m 4f contest. Willie Mullins trains ELIMAY for JP McManus and the seven-year-old heads the market on the back her defeat of Shattered Love at Naas.

Stable companion Colreevy has festival experience, having run fifth to Concertista last March. She has mopped up all three starts over fences this winter and is a keen-going type likely to race prominently.
