Day 3 was a day for the bookies. We saw three short-priced favourites lose in the shape of Mighty Potter and Shiskin as well as Luccia who was on the drift, but still relatively short.

I took a different approach to this year's festival. Normally, I wouldn't get involved with the hot favourites, as I'd try and get them beat. But I thought why try and get them beat if I think they just win, unfortunately for me, they didn't win and I had egg on my face.

It's been a tough week for me, with just the three winners, one on each day. But, Sire Du Berlais winning the Stayers' Hurdle at 50/1 was great to see, not only because he was tipped up, but because he has been a great servant to the sport and has won at 3 festivals now.

I think it's fair to say Shishskin doesn't quite handle Cheltenham over fences. He won over hurdles here, but he looked a mess today, jumping like a lawnmower. But with that came a great revival story of Envoi Allen who proved me wrong, and proved many others wrong. Great to see him back in the big time.

Davy Russell said Mighty Potter might not be as good as we thought. Sorry, but I thought he and the jockeys in behind Stage Star were shocking. We all knew Stage Star would get the lead, so why let him get into a rhythm and run the race he wanted? I still think MP is the best horse in the race, and Davy Russell shouldn't be pointing the blame on the horse. With that being said, Harry Cobden rode a great race, giving Nicholls a win at the Festival for the first time in a couple of years.

Fingers crossed we can all have a profitable day for the last day of the Festival.

All of my detailed previews for Day 4 at the Cheltenham Festival can be found below:

Don't forget you can also have a go at entering the Champion Tipster Competition where there's £200 in Free Bets to be won.

13:30 – JCB Triumph Hurdle

Blood Destiny has tended to jump like a lawnmower on a couple of occasions since moving to Ireland, but this horse looks to have a serious engine. We've seen that he handles the ground, and the Triumph is often a stamina test, so I think he will be staying on strongly and might be suited for this race.

Full race preview:

14:10 – County Hurdle

I landed on Wonderwall who has a lot to prove in a race of this nature. He made an okay chase debut last time out at Newbury which was won by Sebastopol, which Stage Star in second. This horse was a good bumper horse, finishing 3rd in a Listed race at Ascot behind Knappers Hill and Stage Star. He then went to Cheltenham and finished 7th in the Champion Bumper in a steadily run race, which I don't think suited. I think a good pace on soft ground will be ideal for him. He might run well at a price, or he might be pulled up, but I think he is worth a small bet.

Full race preview:

14:50 – Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle

My first fancy for this race is Favori De Champdou who won a Grade 2 last time out on heavy ground, and looked like a good strong stayer at this trip. He is 3/3 over hurdles and the race he won had previously been won by the likes of Fury Road who finished 3rd in this race in 2019, Penhill a previous winner of this race and Faugheen. This horse produced the joint highest RPR of this race in the last ten years with Faugheen, so it rates as a good run in my eyes.

My second fancy is Dawn Rising and he is being overlooked in the market for some reason, which I'm not quite sure about. I think he is crying out for this trip over 3m on soft ground. He was 102 rated on the flat when trained by Aidan O'Brien, so clearly has tonnes of ability and I think he has the engine to get involved.

Full race preview:

15:30 – Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup

I've had many opinions on Bravemansgame over the years, whether I think he is a stayer or not, do I think he likes Cheltenham, but somehow my dart has landed on him to win the Gold Cup. I think he probably has the best piece of form in the race.

Full race preview:

16:10 –  St. James's Place Festival Challenge Cup Open Hunters' Chase

I really do like the chances of Vaucelet in this race. David Christie went close in this race last year with Winged Leader, but I think he's come back this year with a better horse.

Full race preview:

16:50 – Mares' Chase

I thought Impervious was the one with the stand-out piece of form in this race. This mare has progressed into a lovely horse since being sent over fences. She was a good hurdler, but the improvement she's made this season is quite unbelievable.

Full race preview:

17:30 – Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle

I like Cool Survivor who is ridden by Sam Ewing, who rides a lot of Gordon. This horse probably has the best form in the race and considering he finished 4th in a Grade 1 last time around, you've got to say he is a clear Graded horse in a handicap.

    Pembroke County Hurdle 2.10 6/1

This is more of a tip than a horse I have worked with. I was working with the yard back in 2019 when Ch’tibello won this race for them was coming off a wind op and still keep in touch with everyone down there. Dan knows exactly what it takes to win the County, 3 wins in it since 2016. What you need for this race is an unexposed type, 5 or 6 year olds are usually the ones to be on 15 of the last 19 winners were between these ages. I spoke to Dan in December and he told me then this was going to win the County. It ran over too far last time out this is its distance today, everything is perfect for it today, the ground, the pace is guaranteed to suit, the experiencevof running on the horse is going to be a big advantage. The problem, obviously, is getting luck in running with 26 runners. Dan gave me two tips for the festival one has already won , Langer Dan and this is the other one, and this is was his best chance.
Word is out there about this horses chances already you could get 10/1 just yesterday at about 4 pm, the bookies aren’t taking chances. I’m on at double figure odds each way so feel I have an outstanding bet but is it a great bet at the current odds of 6/1? You have to make your own minds up..
If Pembroke gets luck in running it will be right up there no doubt about it but you could find another unexposed type coming out the pack. Willie Mullins horses are a big danger in this race, the top weight Sharjah is such an interesting runner in this. I messaged Dan this week and he is very happy, I feel he thinks he’s going to land a 4th win in this race.
Cant wait to see how this unfolds today.
I only wish I had posted this yesterday afternoon for everyone to get on at the bigger odds. . .

Good luck everyone whatever you decide to go with today

Two each way shouts for me which I think can outrun their odds:

    2.10 – Pied Piper @ 16/1
    5.30 – Might I @ 10/1

Fancy Bravemansgame for the big one at 7/1 which I think is cracking value

Good luck everyone and thanks Hibee1 for yesterday and I’ll be on Pembroke too

3 2nds was about as good as it got yesterday, but I was right to take on the 2 shorties but I really should learn to lay horses rather than look for alternatives but I suppose I prefer that type of bet than betting on a horse to lose.
Anyway onto today and unfortunately im back in hospital but its only a precaution as i was worried if things did go wrong over the long weekend id end up in A&E which isnt ideal i said id come in so im at least in the right ward.

    Triumph

    Winner Unknown
    Horses Backed Reverse Tricast

I’m not going to try pick the winner. Blood Destiny has his ground but has to give 7lbs to the mares. But one for sure is the top 3 are head and shoulders above the rest of the field so a reverse tricast I think is the way to go and baring accidents it shouldn’t be far away.

    County

    Winner Sharjah
    Horses Backed Sharjah, Ballyadam

A mark of 155 for Sharjah looks well within his capabilities. WM has won the race 3 times since 2017 and has won it with similar types such as Arctic Fire who was also a grade 1 horse dropping into h’cap company.
I’ve also backed Ballyadam ew who was 5th last year. He’s 4lbs higher here but the HDB yard are in such good form he can’t be ignored.
I’ll have a saver on Pembroke too

    Albert Bartlett

    Winner Unknown
    Horses Backed Hiddenvalley Lake

This race has produced some very big priced winners recently. The year Monkfish won is the last time we had a single figure priced Winner since 2013 so it mightn’t be the worst tactic to look beyond the head of the market.
But current fav Corbetts Cross looks a hell of a horse and was recently purchased by JP.
My only concern for him is he really battled to win over 2m and that was only 26th Feb but if he’s recovered he’ll take a lot of beating but I backed HVL a while ago and although he was beaten by his stable companion lto he was giving 6lbs and the ground was heavy. I’m hoping the ground dries out a bit today otherwise I’ll be looking for an alternative.

    Gold Cup

    Winner A Plus Tard
Horses Backed GDC, Conflated 33/1 ew

Really hope GDC can win but the way HDB has his yard this week I have to have my doubts. I’m sticking to what I’ve backed and we’ll see what happens but I’m not confident.

    Hunter Chase

I’ve backed Vaucelet as I hope David Christie can have a winner.

    Mares Chase

    Winner ADV
    Horses Backed ADV

ADV is the most talented horse in the race but she jumps to her right which is a concern. If that can be kept under control she should win this race.

    Martin Pipe

I’m going to wait until post time on this one as I’m still not sure what to back.

    BOL and

Gonna be very interesting to see which route they take with CH.
Surely he has to go chasing to become a true great ?

    • elvis parsley 1 year ago

      Istabraq is a prime example.
Never went chasing and a few lesser horses have been mentioned as greats because they did both disciplines.
Istabraq would be in arkles category if he won big chases too.
