This is a cracking race on paper, and finally some of the big guns take on each other in a Novice Chase.
AHOY SENOR is a quality horse, and a horse I have plenty of time for. He won a Grade 1 last year at Aintree at odds of 66/1, beating BRAVEMANSGAME and beating him by 7L.
When they said they were going chasing this year, I thought he was the horse they’d all have to beat, and expected him to take to chasing very well, but it hasn’t quite gone to plan in my opinion. He jumps well enough, but there are horses in this race who arguably jump better than him. He was convincingly put in his place by his old foe, Bravemansgame, at Kempton and I can’t see him reversing the form on this kind of track.
Connections obviously avoided Cheltenham last year for a reason, and opted for Aintree, and I do think he is better suited on a flat track. He has been jumping out to his right as well in his races, which is another concern. Would it surprise me if he won this? Not at all, he has bags of ability, but he’s not the one I’d be on for this, and I’m one of his biggest fans.
Going back to the Nicholls horse, he is a beautiful jumper for a novice, and a definite Grade 1 horse, but I’m not convinced he’s better over this trip, especially on a testing track like Cheltenham.
There’s probably a reason why they kept him to a shorter trip last year when he was novice hurdling, won his races well up until bumping into Bob Olinger in the Ballymore. I think for this race, previously known as the RSA, you have to be a thorough stayer at the trip, and I’m not quite sure he is. He’ll be well backed, and if he wins it wouldn’t be a shock, but at the prices, I’ll pass.

L'HOMME PRESSE is another cracking jumper and has been a total revelation this year for Venetia Williams and Charlie Deutsch who have been a great partnership throughout the year. This horse likes to race prominently, doesn’t necessarily have to lead, but will be applying pressure on the front runners.
It’s interesting they’ve gone for this race, as they had him entered in the 2m 4f on Thursday. Though I think he might stay, and connections seem confident, I’m once again having doubts. His pedigree doesn’t exactly suggest he’ll be better for it, and at the prices I think you can look elsewhere.
I think there could be a fair amount of pace in this race if Ahoy Senor, L’Homme Presse and even THREEUNDERTHRUFIVE try and lead, and it could set it up for a closer.

FURY ROAD is my fancy in this, and the odds around in the mid-teens is fairly respectable and understandable. He doesn’t have the sexy profile as the ones towards the top of the market who have 1’s next to their form, but he is a classy horse and is a strong stayer who handles the track. On official ratings, he is the second-best horse in the race, being rated 160, 4lbs inferior to Bravemansgame.
This horse finished 3rd in the Albert Bartlett back in 2020 behind Monkfish, which is a cracking piece of form, and he was staying on powerfully that day up the hill, so you know his stamina is there. Since then, he’s been a bit stop/start, but has since got his career back since moving to fences. He started off over 2m 4/5 running well behind Beacon Edge, Gabynako, but that trip was probably on the sharp side. He then won a Grade 1 beating Run Wild Fred in easy fashion, and that was a very nice run.
I think you can forgive him for his run at Leopardstown where he out of his comfort zone with a strong pace set, and he made a shuddering mistake when travelling okay, and that put his race to bed. This trip and track will suit better, and I think he is worth an EW shot.
