A GLORIOUS St Patrick’s Day today which started very shakily – Zabana didn’t even get past the tape at the start before Davy Russell was on his chorus and verse. Fair play to Ladbrokes though who gave us our money back in cash. Bravo.

The start was a farce and something needs to be done to improve that from the punter’s point of view. Racing needs to be as transparent as possible and these bizarre starts that leave people out of pocket before the race has even started aren’t fair.

Anyway, things didn’t get much better in the next race although Flintham had me on the edge of my seat for the first 2.5 miles. At one point I thought he was going to do the business at a huge price but he couldn’t keep up the gallop at the end. Vautour got the accumulator off to the perfect start and then Thistlecrack and Limini made it 3 from 3 so the the profit is in the bank from that.

Barters Hill would make it 4 out of 4 tomorrow for a sensational return. Bloody Mary got us a nice each way return and then the moment that sent me straight into the arms of Arthur Guinness – Cause of Causes absolutely scorched up as I thought he would in the Kim Muir at 11/2. Possibly the highlight of the week so far for me. I advised you all to “get the waders on” and I hope you did.

JCB Triumph Hurdle

  • 1.30pm
  • 2 miles 1 furlong
  • Novice Hurdlers
  • 4 year olds only

A race for 4 year old hurdlers which is tricky because there isn’t a whole lot to go on in terms of form and the 4 year olds can improve significantly between races as they start to learn the game.

Ivanovich Gorbatov looked like he would be nailed on for this after a sensational debut but he was awful the next time out and if you are willing to forgive him that run then his price is now more reasonable and he could be value. I’m not so sure though.

I think Paul Nicholls holds the key here with 5 runners, most of whom are unexposed and could be real improvers. We saw what he can do to improve a hurdler and get him ready for a big race with Diego Du Charmil who bolted up for us on Wednesday. Connetable and Tommy Silver have really impressed me but ZUBAYR was tremendous on his hurdles debut at Kempton, beating some good horses in behind and if he has any sort of improvement to come then he could really be impressive here. We lost out in the first race yesterday with a Z-horse so let’s hope we get a bit more luck with this lad.
