Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase
- 4.10pm
- A thorough test of stamina at almost 4 miles with lots of twists and turns
- Run over a variety of obstacles including hedges, steep banks and Grand National style fences
This is a very unique test of stamina and just as importantly, the versatility of the horse’s jumping. The runners meet all sorts of obstacles on their way round and it can be tricky to get into a rhythm. Horses with experience over the course are at a big advantage. It’s a quirky race that some people don’t like but it’s one of my favourites and adds to the unique appeal of the festival.
Balthazar King is probably my favourite horse in training and he won this race in 2014 and 2012. He had an almighty fall in the Grand National when other horses crashed into him and it looked for a horrible moment like he might not get up. Thankfully he did but he then spent a few months in horsey hospital and has not been seen on the track until now. Aside from the fact that he is getting on a bit he also lost the use of part of a lung as a result of that accident so I can’t see any way that he could be back to his best. If he wins this I will be stunned.
JOSIES ORDERS was tremendous over course and distance twice this season and I fully expect him to do the business again. He is still young and is open to further improvement and with Enda Bolger training he should be spot on for the big day.
The each way alternative in my view is Ballyboker Bridge who was impressive at Punchestown over their Cross Country course and could be the one to chase home the favourite at a decent each way price.
Recommendation:
- JOSIES ORDERS – 2pts win at 11/4 (Ladbrokes)
- Already advised: Josies Orders (Accumulator)
