It’s nice to jump back on the thread again. It’s been a while since I had any selections for you all.
The original plan was to jump on for any ITV meetings which had racing of any sort of significance so apologies in advance that I had nothing for last weekend at Epsom. I’ve decided to jump on Friday's and Saturday's racing with the hope of landing a winner.
Although I’ve been a by-stander as such I do still keep an eye out for the flat racing results and there’s no doubt it’s been a complete minefield since the flat season kicked in. It normally is anyhow, especially when you start trying to pick the bones out of the large sprint handicaps… all that aside I’ve seen some really disappointing runs this season by supposed top horses.
York 3:30
MOHAAFETH had a very impressive season in 2021 winning 4 on the bounce and most of which was in pretty impressive fashion, in particular the race at Newmarket last May where Jim Crowley won the race on the bridle.
Although it was only a 4-runner field he beat some nice types that day in the shape of Secret Protector and Percy’s Lad.
I’ve just went on and seen Percy’s Lad has already ran 3 times this year with two 1sts and a 2nd. So there’s some horses who have progressed this year who he beat easily last year. They may not be of the same rating but you have to take it for what it is.
It’s a hard one, I’m not totally sure on how to take some of Mohaafeth's previous form against previous rivals because as much as some of them has progressed he himself has hit a dip in form.
After going 4 on the bounce he’s been beaten in his last 3 starts, 2 of which were last year and most recently were he finished a disappointing 10 of 14 at Meydan. I’m more than happy to rule a line through the run at Meydan given the circumstances of how the race went from start to finish.
Prior to the run at Meydan he ran a good 4th at York behind the likes of Love and Mishriff. He comes into this race as the highest rated horse in the field. I think the drop back to a mile is a wise move by Haggas who’s stable are in red hot form.
I can see Crowley cantering along and winning this quite easily if Mohaafeth can show any sort of the form he did from last season.
Sandown 1:45
I was originally planning on just having the one selection however I’m happy enough to throw another one up that’s a little bit out there. I've found it hard to do a proper write up on this one as it’s a 7-runner field of 2yr olds with 75% of the field having their first run so I haven’t exactly a lot to go on besides stable form and of pedigree.
I tend to normally avoid punting on races like this but this C Cox runner, JUST BRING IT, caught the eye for me. A 130,000 gns purchase and a half brother to Viareggio who’s placed at listed level.
Ridden by A Kirby, a jockey I’m massively fond of, there’s no reason we can’t see a possible upset against the Appleby and Buick favourite… this is racing after all.
Disappointingly there’s only 2 places on offer but I’ll still take it each way just incase it does manage to grab a place.
Worth a punt at small stakes.
Good luck.
