MILESEY had a profitable start to day one of the Grand National meeting and here are his thoughts for day two.
It's just one day to the big one and there will be a big build-up on the site.
The Card
2pm: John Smith's Top Novices' Hurdle
2.30pm: John Smiths Mildmay Novices' Chase
3.05pm: John Smith's Melling Chase
3.40pm: John Smith's Topham Chase
4.15pm: John Smith's Sefton Novices' Hurdle
4.50pm: John Smiths Mirror Handicap Hurdle
5.25pm: John Smith's Mares Open Flat Race
The first race on the card onday 2 at the Aintree Festival is the excellent Novices Hurdle race as we get the best young hurdlers in Liverpool. Many of the contenders from the Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival will head to Aintree to ensure a top class renewal. In 2012 we saw the excellent General Miller beat the favourite Menorah in an exciting finish, the Nicky Henderson horse gained revenge for his defeat at Cheltenham and we would expect a similar class level in 2012.
Verdict: MY TENT OR YOURS
The Mildmay Novice Chase is another of the excellent races on Friday at the Grand National Festival and it's always a cracking renewal, run at just over the threemile distance so often attracts some of the best chasers around.
Traditionally we see some of the RSA Chase horses from the Cheltenham Festival head to the Mildmay at Aintree so it is often a field with a lot of quality.
Last season we saw Quito De La Roque win the race for Colm Murphy and he is expected to step up to Gold Cup company in the future so it can be an important race in the career of many young horses. While in 2008 we saw Big Buck's take the win in his chasing days, and he of course has gone onto become invincible as a staying hurdler so we often see horse of the highest quality in the Mildmay.
Verdict: ROCKY CREEK
The Melling Chase is one of the big races on the card for day two of the 2013 Aintree Festival and the line-up for Friday is looking mouth-watering. There are some cracking runners looking to take their places including Cue Card who won the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival recently. He was fantastic that day and will be well backed but could be set to take on Champion chase winner Sprinter Sacre in a potentially mouthwatering clash.
Verdict: CUE CARD
The Topham Chase is always worth a watch on the second day of the Festival as it is always a competitive handicap and 2012 will be no different as we see plenty of future Grand National horses take their chance over the Aintree fences. It is a wide open betting though with the likes of Always Waining and Little Josh looking in with a chance according to the bookmakers in a race that will be the highlight of day two.
Verdict: BENNYS MIST
The Sefton Novices Hurdle is a firm fixture on Ladies Day at the Grand National Festival and it is one of the highlights of the meeting, novice hurdles will compete over three miles as they look to win one of the biggest races of the season.
Previous winners of the Sefton Novices include Black Jack Ketchum and Chief Dan George who both went on to achieve bigger and better things later on in their careers. It is common place to see horses from the Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival head to Aintree for the Sefton Hurdle so that does ensure we always get a good standard for the race.
Verdict: ROAD TO RICHES
This two-mile John Smiths Handicap Hurdle race on day two fits nicely on the card and will be an excellent renewal for punters to sink their teeth into, we had a win in the race last season for AP McCoy and Jonjo O'Neill as Ringaroses picked up the win at a price of 10/1. It will no doubt be an exciting race on Ladies Day at the Grand National Meeting despite not being one of the stand out on the card at this stage.
Verdict: BROADWAY BUFFALO
The John Smiths Mares Open Race is of course a flat race run under National Hunt Rules for the Mares and it is sure to be an exciting renewal for punters to enjoy. We had a 20-1 winner in this one last season as Tempest River got up to win which proves there can often be some great value here for punters to sink their teeth into.
Verdict: THE PIRATES QUEEN

Any thoughts for bet of the day?
Not sure how Milesy had a profitable day yesterday. I didn’t. Of his 10 picks, 1 won and 1 placed.
Am gonna keep the faith though.
Milesey, I always bet CUE CARD, but i didnt think he could beat sprinter, you agreed when i asked you last week, what as made you changed your mind?
The Chief, not sure if Milesey’s taking calls so to speak. Up at Aintree doing his thang.
No probs MR F, I bet Cue Card at Cheltenham as I always back him and when i knew he was taking on Sprinter sacre at Aintree, few weeks ago i asked Milesey did he think Cue Card had a chance of beating him and he said “no chance”, just wondered he selected him is it an E/W pick or does he know something about the fav we dont :) anyway ive had my token 20 on Cue Card as id rather lose 20 than see him romped away with the race today and not be on him.
the chief, I don’t know but he’s been talking up Cue Card for a few days. Will be some tip if it comes up. Right, I’m calling it a night.
