IN-FORM trainer Donald McCain sets a poser by saddling disputing market leaders PRINCESS MONONOKE (4.10) and Toboggan's Gift at Sedgefield.
Top weight Princess Mononoke was beaten quite a long way when third at Bangor but winner Virginia Chick came out and dead-heated in a decent contest at Ludlow, so the form looks solid enough. A 2lb drop in her rating helps.
Toboggan's Gift makes his debut for McCain having switched from Ann Duffield, so the betting market should be informative.
TONTO'S SPIRIT (1.10) bids to repeat last year's runaway success in the opener.
This habitual front-runner romped home by 23 lengths but is 7lb higher today. What's more, this looks a stronger renewal but at 9-2 Tonto's Spirit makes plenty of each-way appeal if all eight go to post.
A four-time winner on the Flat last season, all in the mud, Tonto's Spirit was no match for a couple of improvers here on Boxing Day and his last-of-three previously at Wetherby is better than it looks. Winner Aristo Du Plessis is a smart sort and Tonto's Spirit was just caught for the runner-up berth by Sakhee's City. That horse thumped Zeroeshadesofgrey and Beeno at Catterick last week.
It is tight at the head of the betting, with Leicester winner The New Pharoah feared most.
