CALIBURN (2.10) was never put into the race until it was too late at Thirsk and a more prominent display can reasonably be anticipated at Haydock.
Hugo Palmer’s colt still finished on the heels of Blazing Saddles and subsequent winner Lucky Deal and James Doyle takes the reins this time.
At Kempton, BERKSHIRE SPIRIT (7.40) will appreciate going an extra furlong after keeping-on into fourth behind Beringer at Leicester. That was quite a strong handicap for the grade and Berkshire Spirit had previously run very well at York when filling the minor placing behind Mark Johnston’s useful duo Baghdad and Making Miracles.
TITUS BOLT (7.00) has dropped to a basement mark of 51 and will take a deal of beating in the 1m 3f handicap on a moderate midweek card at Hamilton Park.
Titus Bolt seemed to enjoy the experience when winning over hurdles at Perth and Jim Goldie’s gelding has been well handicapped on the Flat for some time without putting his best foot forward. Maybe this is his big night, with Iain Jardine’s Rosemay the likely danger.
Jardine must be tearing his hair out trying to find a race for COLOUR CONTRAST (8.00), runner-up on no less than four straight occasions. He has run well at Hamilton in the past and Saturday’s second at Musselburgh at least proves his well-being.
PICKS PINTA (6.00) should go well at decent odds in the opening 6f amateur riders’ handicap.
The gelding won an amateur riders’ race over course and distance two summers ago off a mark of 65 and is chucked in here off 51 if he can recapture some of that old magic.
His most recent run at Beverley behind Eeh Bah Gum offers some encouragement, with Picks Pinta staying on into sixth over five furlongs. There was a huge draw bias that day with the first three drawn 2-3-6. Picks Pinta had little chance emerging from stall 13 and did well under the circumstances. Abbie McCain is a good booking and a tongue tie goes on for the first time.
CAMEO STAR (7.30) has cheek-pieces on for the first time and wouldn’t need to step up much on his fourth at Catterick to take a hand. Winner Eeh Bah Gum has improved leaps and bounds and runner-up Undercover Brother won a modest contest at Nottingham earlier this week. The return to six furlongs should benefit Cameo Star and if the ‘dead eight’ go to post he is worth an each-way dabble.
LOGI (8.30) is keeping one step ahead of the handicapper and has every chance of completing a Hamilton hat-trick under Jamie Gormley. He is the type of sprinter that just does enough and a 5lb rise isn’t unfair.

Johnb’s World Cup players to watch (number 2)
Maximiliano Gómez 21yo (Uruguay)
He may not play much in this tournament with Suarez and Cavani leading the line for Uruguay but he will play a part and he has to be one of the most exciting young talents at the World Cup
He has five caps and is yet to score for his country but his record at club level is pretty good, 47 appearances for Defensor Sporting saw him score 28 goals before a move to Celta Vigo where he has played 36 times and scored 17 goals, the €4m Celta paid looks an absolute steal and he could be on his way to Tottenham or Dortmund in the summer but would cost about €50m, I would be surprised if one of the big clubs didn’t come in for him,
He has everything in his game, excellent technical skills and ball control, he has speed and looks to make runs in behind the defence and protects the ball well, he has a good shot and is also a big threat in the air, he is strong on the ball, hardworking and a team player, back home in Uruguay they are hailing him as the new Suarez but in my opinion Maxi Gómez is going to be better,
Definitely a player to keep an eye on, now and in the future
