MASHAM STAR (4.10) can throw in the odd shocker but he is undeniably well treated if on a going day at Ayr.
A year ago Mark Johnston’s gelding ran third in the valuable Haydock Silver Bowl off a rating of 101. Masham Star is down to 86 here having been dropped another 2lb by the handicapper. He ran much better than his 12th position suggests behind Ripp Orf in the Victoria Cup at Ascot, having led his group for a long way on the ‘wrong’ side of the track away from the main action.
On his only previous visit to Ayr Masham Star won by four lengths on fast ground and he is just the type to run up a sequence if re-discovering his old form. One firm put him up at 5-1 around teatime last night but that soon disappeared.
Gordon Elliott lifted the lady riders’ 1m 5f handicap on the card last year and the prize can return to Ireland courtesy of Adrian Keatley’s NORTHERN SKY (5.45).
The gelding raced in Scotland a couple of seasons ago, finishing runner-up to Wotabreeze at Hamilton over a shorter trip. Northern Sky stayed 1m 4f no problem last time out at Tipperary when again finding one too good and Keatley’s Ayr raids are always worth scrutiny.
Abbie McCain is one of my favourite lady amateurs and she gets the leg-up on R Mike Smith’s Archibelle. The filly has been in good form over two miles on the all-weather at Newcastle and she should go well at her local track.
Calliope’s third to Ingleby Hollow at Wetherby was a fine effort and she’ll go close if handling this faster surface. Carthage has his first run for Mick Appleby since a switch from Brian Ellison and Serena Brotherton is an eye-catching booking.
My other bets are all of a fairly speculative each-way nature at big prices, but a case can be made for all of them.
KIWI BAY (2.35) won a 1m 1f apprentice handicap here 12 months ago off a mark of 66 but is down to 55, with Paula Muir now taking off 7lb.
WARRIOR’S SPIRIT (3.05) was never in the hunt when ninth behind Nature Boy at Beverley but drops in class on the back of a 5lb reduction in his official rating. A year ago this month David O’Meara’s gelding ran fourth to Fire Brigade at Newmarket off 81 and now has an official mark of 60. Danny Tudhope replaces an apprentice.
BEAUDEN BARRETT (3.35) split the Keith Dalgleish-trained duo Maulesden May and Somnambulist here last August and is 5lb lower. His trainer John Quinn remains in very good form.
ZIHAAM (5.15) represents Roger Fell, another trainer in tip-top form, and last week’s fourth to Regal Mirage at Hamilton is looking better on the back of that winner’s excellent fourth to Reverend Jacobs at York last week in a very competitive Class 4 handicap.
Recommended bets
- Ayr 4.10 – Masham Star (3-1, bet365)
- Ayr 5.45 – Northern Sky (5-2, bet365)
- Ayr 2.35 – Kiwi Bay ew (16-1, Ladbrokes))
- Ayr 3.05 – Warrior’s Spirit ew (12-1, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power)
- Ayr 3.35 – Beauden Barrett ew (20-1, William Hill, Paddy Power)
- Ayr 5.15 – Zihaam ew (10-1, Ladbrokes)
WARRIORS SPIRIT 3.05 AYR. 12-1. Beat Crystal Spirit on its second run, now rated 118+ warriors now rated 60 , more than 4 stone difference! It’s uncanny how O’Meara gets his top weights to win. It’s thrown in on past form, worth chancing well down in class.
Nap/Nb Ana Lichious 5-15 Ayr backed him at 15/2 yesterday now as low as 7/2 but you can still get 5/1 with some bookies

Afternoon racing fans 1 tip from me today is BUNGEE JUMP 3:45 Chepstow i took 7s last night but its as low as 3s now so i could be onto something..
Good spot wish i got 7-1 happy with 9-2
The money is coming for Magical in the Oaks, she hasn’t run above a mile yet but as I was saying all last year she would relish the 1m 4f distance, she was advised at 33/1 and went as low as 8/1 last year but then drifted back out to 33/1
The money is coming again though and she is as low as 10/1 now and the latest news from the trainer that Ryan Moore could pick Magical to ride should see her get even shorter
Afternoon all .Well done yesterdays winners. 3/1 winner myself so profit on the day.
Long wait for mine today.

Good luck tonight buss im looking at hexham later we can have a chat then think i might have a good one. I hope you followed BUNGEE JUMP i know you were asking for a tip yesterday off me??
Hey buss did you see the ride from brian hughes on robins legend?? We were screaming at the tv in the bookies, i wasnt on it myself but the stewards need to look at that. 2-1 fav and beaten 75 lengths!??!! No wonder people say this sport can be dodgy! Unlucky today mate looks like the last 2 days small profit wiped out and some but i know if anyone can land a 4 or 5 timer tomorrow that is you! Onwards we go mate ??
P.S hopefully you backed bungee jump so it will have saved your day! ?
Boing!!!! Bungee jump absolutly destroys the field never in doubt!
Very easy winner mrchris thanks for that i got 9-2. Great day for you
Thanks mate wouldnt quite call 7 times my stake a great day but its a decent day ??
John, how will Roaring Lion get on in the Derby now that the owners pulled him from the French Derby?
Decent chance, I think he will do better than Saxon Warrior
Nelson still entered
I through my docket away after last time. I might have to re write it in PP again
notorious i think roaring lion have a great chance of winning the derby after that last performance ,i took the 20/1 before that race now 8/1 so hoping for a big run, haven’t been impressed with nelson ,but you never know
Need plugg nap/nab for very big odds double as well.
The Plug, perhaps you can shed some light on Qatar Racing pulling all there horses from Ger Lyons. It was a hug shock in general, as Ger is one of the top trainers in the country. There’s all sorts of rumors going around like Qatar racing disagreeing over declarations of certain horses, even disputing certain jockey bookings by Lyons.
Ask mrchris he probly knows.
Notorious ,im sorry i haven’t heard anything.that is a shock because g lyons is a very good trainer and respected by ever other trainer .im sure we will know more in the coming days
I have a few connections in several newmarket yards and get the odd decent tip. I have one this week that is enterned to run stay tuned people i am more than happy to share. Love this site great folk ??
You can probly tell im a bit hyped after that winner lol but me and my mates had it right off big bets landed all round???
Can tell us horse name now mrchris?
Sad plugg tip is non runner but good i win 2 singles. Good day
