COCKLEY BECK (2.35) was handed a timely boost to her form yesterday and rates a solid wager at Ayr’s midweek meeting.
Nicky Richards’ mare finished third to yesterday’s easy Newcastle scorer Petticoat Tails when they clashed at Wetherby on Boxing Day. That is a nice piece of form as runner-up Schiaparannie was a previous scorer for Malcolm Jefferson.
BULKOV (2.05) will take a deal of beating in the 2m novices’ hurdle. Micky Hammond’s charge finished runner-up to Black Art at Sedgefield in early January and that winner followed up in game style at the same track on Sunday.
Uncle Alastair held on to beat Donna’s Delight over 2m 4f here before Christmas but the runner-up didn’t do much for the form at Newcastle yesterday.
PRECIOUS CARGO (4.20) is worth a market check in the bumper. Owner Thomas Barr, back in the game after having had horses a few years ago with the likes of David Pipe, Alan King and Edward O’Grady, splashes out big bucks for his horses and Lucinda Russell saddled him a bumper winner at Kelso last week courtesy of Highland Hunter.
Precious Cargo, a son of Yeats, may well be useful.
SWEET AS CANDY (1.35) is a bit more speculative but Rose Dobbin’s string is going well.
He was a 16-1 shot when running fourth to The Great Getaway at Newcastle before Christmas and third horse Snapdragon Fire finished runner-up at Hereford on Monday.
Jenni Candlish’s Mankala was five lengths behind my selection that day but was well supported in the betting (5-1).
