FIRE BRIGADE (5.20) could dash to punters' rescue in the concluding Silver Cambridgeshire handicap on day two at Newmarket.
Michael Bell's three-year-old is at his best with some cut underfoot and the track was riding quite slow yesterday after more than 5mm rain overnight.
Fire Brigade has already posted soft ground victories at Haydock and here at HQ but his best effort came three weeks ago when he gave well-touted Cape Byron a scare at Ascot, the pair pulling well clear of the stragglers. He is due to go up 5lb so is attractively treated.
SIR JOHN LAVERY (3.35) was given a real stinker of a ride from Ryan Moore when a fast-closing fourth to Suedois in a Group 2 at Leopardstown and will need to be at the top of his game to see off favourite Beat The Bank, so impressive when scoring on soft ground at Goodwood.
Aidan O'Brien considered Sir John Lavery one of his main Classic contenders over the winter but the Ballydoyle colt took a while to come to hand. He was impressive at Cork prior to his Leopardstown debacle when unable to find clear daylight until too late in the day nad this strapping colt may be ready to fulfil his undoubted potential.
Moore has ridden the last two winners of this race (Cougar Mountain and Time Test) and will be keen to atone for his poor Leopardstown ride on Sir John Lavery.
At Haydock, TAXMEIFYOUCAN (4.30) is a knocking bet in the 1m 6f handicap. The form of his course and distance victory on similar testing ground has worked out a treat. Runner-up Face The Facts scored in battling fashion at HQ yesterday, while third horse Time To Study won at Doncaster's St Leger festival.
Keith Dalgleish's three-year-old has progressed throughout the season and can rack up a four-timer at the main expense of TOR.
Iain Jardine's gelding will like the ground and, along with Taxmeifyoucan, has done his backers proud this summer.
