MY main interest is the Flat and this evening’s Wolverhampton card looks quite tasty.

BERKSHIRE SPIRIT (8.00) could well outclass his rivals in the 1m 4f handicap and I’d recommend taking advantage of the Best Price Guarantee offers early as the Wolves bookies are notorious for returning cramped SPs.

Andrew Balding’s three-year-old was sent off a warm order returning from a 159-day break at Southwell but was put firmly in his place by Amadeus.

Richard Fahey’s winner was unexposed and clearly pretty useful, so Berkshire Spirit may have been attempting the impossible conceding 16lb. There was a long way back to the third and Berkshire Spirit ran an excellent fourth at Newmarket last November when just behind Godolphin’s useful Kind Act in a competitive nursery.

Elgin pops up in the 1m 4f maiden, only 39 days after his excellent fifth in the Champion Hurdle. I can only assume connections are mapping out a Flat campaign (he needs three runs for an official mark), so Elgin could well turn up in one of the big staying handicaps later in the season.

He shouldn’t trouble the trio of southern-based three-year-olds this evening, with Charlie Appleby’s GHOSTWATCH (8.30) possibly the pick. This son of Dubawi finished third to Roaring Lion on his debut at HQ before occupying the same slot on his only other run last season, at Haydock.

With Saeed bin Suroor and Sir Michael Stoute fielding unexposed types, the betting market should be interesting.

A low-grade Class 6 handicap brings down the curtain on a frantic day of betting activity and I’ll chance a bit on CASEMATES SQUARE (9.00). The ex-Irish gelding has hinted at ability for Ian Williams and may slip under the bookmakers’ radar on such a busy Saturday (take an early price).

NEWSTEAD ABBEY (6.30) and ZAFARANAH (7.00) are other each-way bets on the card, while ABOVE THE REST (3.05) carries my dough at Thirsk this afternoon.

The gelding’s handicap mark was blown when he finished eighth to Talaayeb in the Group 3 City Of York Stakes last August, hence his appearance in this Conditions event. David Barron does especially well at his local track.

I can’t resist those big Saturday handicaps, with bookmakers offering up to six places, and LORD OF THE ROCK (3.45), although a bit unpredictable, has conditions in his favour in the Newbury Spring Cup.

Ground on the easy side is a prerequisite for the six-year-old and he goes particularly well in races over a straight course.

Lord Of The Rock landed the 2016 Doncaster Spring Mile from Donncha when trained by Michael Dods and he was fourth in the same race this year on his first start for Jedd O’Keefe. Silvestre De Sousa is a cracking booking and stall 19 should be to his advantage.

Humbert, fighting fit from the all-weather, ran a gallant second in the Spring Mile, with John Gosden’s Taqdeer a disappointing favourite back in seventh.

Graphite Storm runs the track well and enjoys a soft surface.

Elgin makes his flat debut tomorrow in a one and a half flat race at wolves.
Is king thinking about royal Ascot gold cup for elgin ?
King yard in good form and does well in staying flat races.
If it was 2 miles I would be having a dabble but may be outpaced by one of the 3 year olds.
      Interesting watch anyhow.
